I Just called MSN as I'm looking around at some CPC shopping directory listings. Strating with the bigger players first and also trying to build a picture of who owns which directories and where my adverts will be displayed.

Nightmare!

Firstly I had to battle to get any sort of avg cpc out of them, eventually I worked out the minimum is 15p and that's what most clicks actually cost.

The young lady was keen to point out that this price has dropped significantly over the last two years and that they were now extremely competitive. I suggested 15p was in fact fairly average and that Google Base was free. She said something about Google Adwords being different :| I decided not to pursue the fact that I wasn't talking about Adwords.

Whatever - 15p is within budget and its worth a try, where do I sign up? Minimum budget?

But no - its not this simple. I was told that due to people finding that MSN shopping doesnt work well for some companies products an accounts specialist would have to visit my site and look at what I want to advertise - this will be done within a fortnight. A fortnight!!!

I tried to explain that I'm not a useless moron and that I know my competitors are already on the directory, I have identified something I want to target! Its CPC, there is no risk if my products are not popular. Besides, I added, if they only let sellers of frequently queried products advertise on a directory how will the directory grow and become usefull in other areas? - Alas, computer says no.

So to sum up I have a two week wait during which Microsoft clealry believe there is no chance of me spending that chunk of money on any of the other CPC solutions out there.

I get the impression that Microsofts entire infrastructure and attitude still harks back to the days before Google came along and whipped the internet from under their feet.

Rant over - please discuss

Yep! I should have known better than to waste my time, I'll leave Microsoft to waste there's by investing in every niche of the web they can and making very little with any of it :)

I think I'll approach the medium sized companies next - they still try hard.
