Does anyone use Magento, using one install for 2 sites, with separate base currencies?
I have got the 2 sites working separately, but can't get different currencies working. Their forum doesnt seem to be much help!

Sorry, can't help. I am still trying to get my head around Magento which has a learning curve more akin to a cliff overhang!
It is frustrating that there is so little support on the Magento forums. I am worried that if I do manage to get it up and running with my look and feel etc that I won't be able to manage if something goes wrong and will end up having to pay through the nose for support.
By the way, who are you hosting Magento with and how do you find the speed? Currently I use shared hosting in the US and the speed is reasonable but I am wondering if I need to move.

Lark,
the one thing about Magento is that is harder to set up, but easier to run (so I have seen mentioned several times)! Unlike other carts, it does split the roles a bit more! I would be less confident fiddling with the design that I would with OSC or one of the variants. I guess knowledge comes with time!
I am also running on a US server and the speed seems fine. There was a leap in speed when they released updates a couple months ago. On the whole, operationally, I do not find the US servers we use any slower/faster than UK servers, the only difference coming when we are ftp'ing a chunk of data - general page serving is fine.

We are running our Magento sites on a dedicated server with Rackspace here in the UK. It's not cheap but it is running reasonably fast, and at least this way we have peace of mind that if we need to tinker with any server config settings to improve performance, we can do that.
It certainly is far more complex that other carts - I think a lot of people are jumping on board and realising they may have bitten off more than they can chew!

"I think a lot of people are jumping on board and realising they may have bitten off more than they can chew!"
And I was one of them. I'm just about up and running now (site in sig) and I'm enjoying the admin section side of things - loads of features that I will look to make the most of. Had a few orders through this week and all seems to be running smoothly.
It's hosted on shared servers in the US, and I think runs fine but others have reported that it can be slow. I think I'm comparing it to before I upgraded the version and made some other changes, when add to cart could be 15 seconds!
And sorry Consultant, I can't help with your problem either. I've struggled a lot with the Magento forum - it's too new for there to be much expertise about.

Magento is lacking badly in the features/customisability of it in my opinion. Give it a couple of years and it might be as good as other free carts :)

I would tend to disagree. It has a stronger, more thought out feature set than any other open source shopping cart. It's also highly customisable in terms of design and functionality, if you know what you are doing. However it is not designed for beginners, and if you want to create a unique customisation of Magento you need to be prepared to get your hands dirty.

Maybe i am just unlucky, but whenever i am asked to 'customise' a magento site, it ends up leading to making hard code changes (outside of the templates). Never a good thing when you upgrade in the future.
However to combat this, we do log every change and mark those outside of the template files for future reference.
