I received a wages cheque from a company I never started work with. Can I bank the cheque or would I be liable to pay them the money back once they find the error.

If you're not entitled to any money from this company then the best thing would be to send it back with a letter. Failing that then destroy the cheque.
If you're not entitled to the money and you bank it you may have to consider accusations of theft.

You're not entitled to the money, so it'd probably be Fraud or Theft. Either way, you're not entitled :)
