We used to run one of these on our site ,allowing customers to post stuff , questions ,tips etc. All went well for 4-5 years until we got spammed to bits on the board so I switched it off. Now thinking of a return visit, any suggestions on keeping it clean -literally.

There is no foolproof. But bulletin boards (including this one) have improved tremendously with regard to efficient filtering. This is vBulletin and phpBB is also very good. The very mention of the two has undoubtedly started a war of advocates, simply ask the proponents of either for links - and you will then have difficulty choosing unless you have something specific in mind.
But then, you may have money to burn and wish to be blessed with a brand for the sake of a brand. There will be no further functional advantage.
