Patent Application

Hi,

During the patent application process, there is a 'search'.

Is this search a full search? i.e. will it cover every application that could be similar?

I am worried that it is not thorough, leaving me open to getting a patent granted and then being sued because it's the same as somebody elses..

If it is a full search, why would I pay for a search before even submitting my application?
