Anybody here seen how Sheffield is now really a "City on the move"?

One question. Why is Leeds, a smaller City more suited to business?

1. Historical- Sheffield was an industrial centre. Leeds has always been a commercial centre. All of the big insurance companies have , or did , for example, have major offices in the City.
2. Communication. The big bosses could always get on a faster train from HQ in London & be in Leeds within a few hours. The trains to Sheffield, even though it's 40 miles closer to London, have always been slower.
3. Perception. Sheffield had a reputation as a dirty heavy industry city. Hardly a great "Label" to attract white collar jobs.
4. Probably the most important. Leeds has always had a business friendly local authority. It encourages investment. It has never had the small minded Labour Council that Sheffield suffered for scores of years. Labour in Sheffield always reluctantly engaged with those "nasty people in commerce & big business" Labour always had a Them & Us attitude which drove away investors.
5. Arthur Scargill. What a lousy advert for Sheffield in the 1970's. Sheffield CC even gave the NUM a grant to come to Sheffield & build their new HQ- a building that was never finished & never occupied. Now, even though it's only less than 30 yrs old it is going to be demolished.
6. Strategic geographical position. Just look at a map for this one.
Hope this gives you an insight. There are plenty of other reasons but they depress me so much I can't bring myself to list them.
PS I'm a well known businessman in Sheffield, which is actually a fantastic city , held back for years by petty politics & which is now going to blossom under Paul Scriven's Liberal Democrat's new Administration. Good bye labour- hello LD's! Thank God!

I live in Sheffield and it seems everytime I go into the town centre a new big funny looking office building has popped out of nowhere.

Sheffield has always been known for its Steel and industrial side and as its now fading away fast its trying to move forward, one of the biggest landmarks from the Industry got demolished a few weeks ago so I guess that is a sign of changing things for Sheffield (The Tinsley Cooling towers)

To be honest I can think of a few 'places' in sheffield that should be demolised before the towers ;)
