View Full Version : Redundancy and Attending Interviews

My house-mate has been made redundant, however he is having difficulty with his employer getting the time off to attend interviews!

He has been invited to a couple of interviews, however on one occasion his current boss would not give him permission to attend given that another employee also had the day booked as leave. The interview was an half a day group assessment followed by individual interviews so it would have been extremely difficult to re-arrange.

He has been invited for another interview this Friday, and this time his boss has told him to rearrange the interview so that it does not coincide with work time!

Can she actually demand something like this? It sounds to me that she is on a power trip, however I would appreciate some advice on behalf of my house-mate - for example, is there any legal entitlement that she has to take into account? I'm sure it would be a different ball game if she was suddenly made redundant!

Any help or advice is much appreciated :)

For a start, under the Employments Rights Act 1996, there is a procedure to be followed by the employer when conducting redundancies, such as a consultation process.......................has this been done?

If you have been continuously employed for 2 years you are allowed a reasonable amount of time off during your notice period to look for another job, for example if you take a day off during the week to attend an interview this would not be considered excessive.

You should also consult with ACAS as soon as possible in case the employer is acting unreasonably.
