I'm currently drawing up a time off in lieu policy, and could do with hearing your thoughts on time off in lieu for travelling. We're a trade show heavy company, and often people have to travel to the show destination in their own time.
They get overnight accomodation of course, and meals paid for, and we currently give TOIL for weekends worked.
Does anyone operate a similar system?

my god, you (rightfully) generous.
If I totted up all the time I was away at weekends and the like, my old company would owe me a month or two!
If a trade show starts on a Monday morning, you should be able to say to staff 'be there at x time'. By offering them accomodation the night before, you shouldnt be givingthe TOIL as well! Give them the option.
Physically working over weekends id different, but maybe you should get them to take it withing a week or two of the show, to stop it building up!.

I'm with consultant - if we're talking professional people, this is a necessary evil.
I always believe that being on full expenses is sufficient compensation. By full expenses, I'm assuming that you pay for all the drinks in the hotel bar on the Sunday evening, etc etc.
