Hi everyone,

I'm looking to create a nice website which will be for a small future online clothes shop.

The visitor can click on a clothing category and it will come up with a list of possible clothes available in that category - Then being able to select and view that product - Then being able to add multiple products to a basket and checking out with the clothes.

So now the visitor/customer will need to obviously pay for the clothes and i want to be able to (in the future) accept credit/debit card payments, just wondered what's the best way to do this and if someones got a link to a specific place that does this would be fantastic.

I got told that Paypal have decent Merchant tools that are available and can do this with payments etc, just wondered if anyone uses it?

Many thanks,
Jamie Hann

Paypal is a good payment option especially for start-ups with little cash to spare and a lot of people like using it (myself included). If you can implement the PayPal Pro option then even better as it will look more professional as if paying by credit card the payment will be made without leaving your website.

Another good budget option is Moneybookers.

Hi Jamie,

For a new startup business selling online, I always advise that the best way to start selling online is indeed through paypal. Its a good starting point, and I usually later convert the system into one through a payment gateway such as PROTX Direct which saves you alot of money. Thats the only downside with paypal, they charge a large amount for each sale and per transaction cost. PROTX Direct only charge £20 for 1000 transactions per month.

I am currently in the middle of moving one my clients onto PROTX and theyre saving alot. I am obviously keeping the option open for shoppers to pay by paypal account, but not the paypal credit card. If you want to check out their site its footprintsglasgow dot co dot uk

If you need any free specialist advice jamie you can contact me through these forums.

Good luck with the venture.

I use paypal for my website and its very easy! You just create a buttom for each item, with price and shipping option and paste in your page builder.

The fees paypal charges isnt a lot and it saves you A LOT of trouble!

If you go with a decent shopping cart i.e. cubecart, zencart, oscommerce etc they give you the option to use PayPal plus many other payment methods.

PayPal works well for start-ups but to save you a lot of issues i would recommend if your sending anything by post its done via reordered delivery so PayPal have nothing to moan about if a buyer opens a none delivered item dispute.

Shopping cart wise we can assist if you want some help with advice / setup / hosting etc just drop me a pm or a call :)

Hi Jamie,

As others have said, there are plenty of good shopping carts out there that will do this for you. Feel free to click the link in my signature to view the shopping carts we support on our payment gateway. Once on the page, click on the logos to visit the cart sites.

Some of the most popular options with our clients are (in no particular order): Open Cart, osCommerce, Zen Cart, ekmPowershop, Roman Cart, Magento, VirtueMart and TomatoCart.

Starting out with something like PayPal is certainly a quick and easy option for taking payments. However, once you are established and have between 6-12 months trading history you may wish to add a secure payment gateway option to give your customers an alternative payment method.

There are many options in the UK for payment processing (ourselves included) and something you many find useful should you decide to look at this is the Electronic Payments (https://www.electronic-payments.co.uk/index.php?module=ept&func=toolinputs&reset=1&theme=ept_default) comparison tool.

I wish you all the best in your new venture.

Paypal intergrates nicely into zen cart and another oprion is nochex which is also pretty good.

I hated PayPal for many many years but they seem to have improved a lot and I use them all the time now. You don't need a PayPal account to use them either you can just use your CC so they are ideal really. I added Nochex just to give the customers the option to use something other than Paypal for all those who don't like them.

I get a lot of payments through Nochex so well worth having on there, I'm not saying those people wouldn't have paid using PayPal had there been no other option, but as there is an option they use it.

So I would say get both PayPal and nochex.
