I'm looking for someone to recommend a good book(s) where I can get an overview on company and commercial law (and hopefully understand what each entails).

The purpose of reading is to increase my own knowledge. I'm looking at the text to be aimed at say the level of someone studying for a LLB (I hold a LLB but didn't study either of these two modules at the time), so not too basic, but not too heavy going as I don't need to know things to the nth degree.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can recommend.

Hi. For company law I would recommend Cases and Materials in Company Law by Len Sealy and Sarah Worthington. It's obviously aimed at the academic side of things and, although it's a case book, it has some very good introductory explanations to a topic which make it good enough to work as a stand alone text book.

Dignam & Lowry "Company Law" is just about to come out in the 5th edition. It's a short stand alone text book which is good on about 80% of topics but is selective about a number of topics.

Personally, I prefer Gower and Davies Principles of Modern Company Law but it's a bit heavier.

All of the above assume that you want to sutdy the academic side of things.

Commercial law is a huge topic. In practice, corporate law is the law relating to companies and their administration. Commercial law is catch-all for any kind of contractual arrangements between businesses and could include international trade, agency, b2b contracts, etc. Is there any particular area you are interested in? There's probably no single book dealing with both company and commercial law - at least not on the academic side. Professor Goode is the leading academic on commercial matters. Seem to recall from university that his books on teh subject were OK.

Thanks for your response.

I suppose that the area I'm interested in is those that relate to what I am doing (director of ltd company), so the law relating to ltd companies, also the law relating to transactions between business and business, business and customer, possibly distance selling, law relating to sole traders and partnerships, I guess a little on employment law.
