You are confusing gateways and merchant accounts. I strongly recommend you google the topics and read a little about what each is before accepting any advice.

Having found out what it is all about, much of the best advice will depend upon your industry and a variety of other factors. You will get some interesting replies on a forum such as this one, with a general questions such as the one you put. The true value of any of them to you, though, will be very questionable however well intended the replies will be.

PETTE, from my personal experience, try Optimal Payments. They can offer a merchant account and payment gateway. FYI, I found their rates are very competitive too. All in all, a complete package to compete with the likes of WorldPay, who I hear are struggling due to a recent system change.

As MKE quite rightly points out, it all comes down to your industry, credit rating and a whole host of other factors. Your quest will indeed spark many replies, some of which will need careful consideration.

I have to agree, Optimal Payments are fantastic and the rates we have with them are very good (much better than what WorldPay / Streamline could offer). :)

Worldpay are to be avoided at the moment, see this thread (http://www.ukbusinessforums.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=63485&highlight=dogs+worldpay) for more on this topic.

It doesn't get any better since that thread ended, one of our newer shop owners has been trying to get his Worldpay account live for 2 weeks. They never return his calls and he can never get through to the techies he needs to speak to.

Paul, Carl, Dave, I just re-read the thread title - it's about getaways, not gateways!
This guy just involved us in a gangstarap! :|

Sorry, pette, couldn't resist once I'd spotted the typo. :)

On a more serious note, thanks for the tip on Optimal, Paul and Carl. Not one I'd heard of. Will look into it.

Does it matter how high the bit Encryption strength is. Or is it the higher your encryption strength is the faster the transcation. For instance 40-bit, 256-bit...
