I had just imagined that everyone else was "down south"

I too am from God's Own County, (hence my username) in my case from the West Riding, and have lived in Sheff for most of my life (apart from spending the 80s in London.)

Harry Enfield's George Whitebread is my favourite comedy character of all time and the phrase "Don't talk tah me abaht sophisticayshun, luv, ah've BEEN ta Leeds!" is one of the greatest lines of humour ever written.

As we're all Yorkshire folk on this thread here's a blog I wrote about Yorkshire comedy characters from Python to Enfield (http://judecalverttoulmin.blogspot.com/2007/02/harry-enfields-yorkshireman-and.html), with YouTube examples. It's proved really popular and people still read it every week which is nice :)

I am not from Sheffield, I am from just over the hills to the West of you in Chapel-en-le-Frith, my wife is from Huddersfield, so I have the Yorkshire accent at home all the time and maybe some of that has rubbed off on me... we visit the county all the time.
