.............anyone have any recommendations?

Basically i want to set up my small(ish) eshop with as little fuss & as reasonably priced as possible.

I don't fancy Mr Site Pro (browser problems, set up glitches, & just not worth the £100 in my opinion), Oscommerce seems to be too involved, Roundcart doesn't seem to have too much choice (with design, templates etc.) & now everyone's saying stay away from Streamlinenet (which i thought looked OK).

I'd prefer an eshop/Webhosting combo-type package with plenty of good Templates to choose from and as i have almost no computer technical skills, it has to be 'very easy' to set up.

If anyone could point me in the right direction, that'd be great.
Thanks.

You could try Avactis, I would suggest looking at there demo first to see if it is something you can work with.

I am with Internet retailer (http://www.internetretailer.biz) and have found it basically very easy to set up/use and very well priced for an all in one hosted solution. the customer support from David has also been excellent.

Have you tried Yahoo? They do an ecommerce set up with hosting and the works. There is a big developer base for the templates too.

Hi,

Take a look at our packages: www.yewtreedigital.com (http://www.yewtreedigital.com)

we offer a complete ecommerce package for just £9.99 per month. Our script is custom built and the site is developed around your ideas and not based on a template.

If you have any question please feel free to get in touch.

what exactly do you want to do? There are a few options.
If you have a normal website, you can add a paypal but, to manage the transaction (free)
You can go to a hosted cart site, but look at the site2go thread to see what happens if that starts to have issues (??£10-20+ per month)
You can arrange you own hosting and stick something like OScommerce or better on (£30+ a year). This is not a complicated piece of software to use and is great for first timers. The software is free
You can arrange your own hosting and buy software - £100's for software and hosting..
You can get some one to write something for you - ££££'s

All reasonable carts do the same thing, but in different ways.

Go to testacart.com and have a play around

Nick, would you like to explain why you are using our websites as examples of your own work?

Unless ALL of our content is removed from your website by the morning, we will initiate legal action.

Please feel free to explain your copyright infringement on this forum.

As the legal owner of www.bohofashionjewellery.co.uk (http://www.bohofashionjewellery.co.uk) and the full ownership of the design for my website which I personally designed in Dreamweaver and which was integrated by David of Internet Retailer, I strongly suggest you immediately remove my site as an example of a site you have designed when you do not in fact have any legal entitlement to. I shall be pursuing this!!!

All members of UKBF I suggest you do not hand any money over to this charlatan!

I notice you don't bother to have a contact telephone number on your website either!

Clearly you also operate a web design company where you take no notice of such things as copyright either!

David & boho,

I would like to appolgise for the way that your content has been displayied on our site. Our new site has recently been launched and this content was part of that relaunch. I have now removed the offending content and the member of staff that copied this content will be given a final warning tomorrow morning.

Once again i appologise for any damage this has caused.

Personally I would recommend my own hosting provider www.internetretailer.biz (http://www.internetretailer.biz) I have had 3 years of excellent service from them and they are very experienced in the field of ecommerce and always provide excellent customer support and service, something which is vital when it comes to running a high profile fast moving retail website.

Glad I spotted that one Boho / Dave

It just didn't ring true when looking at Yewtree, hence the email to Boho to clarify the situation before I publically questioned his websites.

I am sceptical that there are any staff to hand this final warning to. Personally I can't believe the gall and stupidity of him.

If you were going to rip off someone’s work and pass it as your own, surely you wouldn't do that within earshot of the owner! Doh.

I appreciated the heads up Matt, its not nice to see someone trying to pass off our own eCommerce shops (http://www.internetretailer.biz/partner/qs_portfolio.aspx) as their own.

Nick has apologised and we'll periodically check to make sure his 'designer' doesn't infringe copyright again.

Coming back to the original question, nothing is cheaper than free, and there are many free packages available. What they will cost you, though, is time. The documentation may be limited, and you won't get guaranteed support.

I do have a vested interest in one particular commercial package, but IMO they are better value for most people (ie for non-technical users) because more effort goes into developing ease of use, production of proper manuals, and particularly to providing support.

You can go for a hosted solution, which you will pay for monthly, and the up-front cost is low. It should be very easy to use, and you can manage your shop from anywhere. OTOH, all your data is on the supplier's servers, and you will keep shelling out every month for the life of your business.

A software package that you purchase outright and install on your PC is likely to offer more functionality and cost less in the long term, and gives you total control and ownership. But the up-front cost is higher, and it may be a bit harder to learn.

You can find examples of both types on Actinic's web site.

To the original OP, take a look at our eCommerce software (http://www.openmindcommerce.co.uk).

It's very simple to use
It's very quick to skin and design
It's fully integrated with KashFlow
It comes with full FTP access and is open source (apart from the admin area)
It's really rather good but then I'm slightly biased ;)

Seriously though, take a look (http://www.openmindcommerce.co.uk/demo.cfm) and do give me a call if you have any questions.
