Hi All,

I've just been employed as a consultant through my business and I know I need Public Liability and Professional Indemnity insurance.

My question is, how much should I be paying for these? There's only me as the sole director of a limited company with no employees or sub-contractors. I am not VAT registered and the position is in a laboratory. It's a slightly unusual set up but makes sense as the work is ad hoc and a way to bring income into my business, which is predominately events management

Also can anyone recommend a company that can supply both these insurances, maybe as a package, that gives good cover but that won't cripple me before I even get started?

Thanks!

PL and PI are both complex areas of insurance and so short of actually getting a quote no one is going to realistically be able to give you any meaningful estimate of premium. There are many considerations such as sum insured (ie maxmium payout), what sort of work you will be undertaking, what sort of responsibilities you will have etc. Someone who works in a lab cleaning test tubes for a school will pay much less than someone advising a nuclear research centre on the development of a new power centre.
