I have a company at the moment which is "company name" group. I would like to change this to "company name" groups as i have the domain name to match. Is it possible to just do a simple name change. It it against the law to have two companies with similar names?

Yes you can certainly change a company name easily enough. You need to pass a shareholder's resolution and then file a copy together with the statutory fee at Companies House. Check out the guidance on the Companies House website.
You are right that you can't have 2 companies with confusingly similar names but if you are changing an existing company name to another very similar name then there should be no problem as the 2 names will not exist at the same time as one is being switched for the other.

The use of the word group in a company name has a certain implication as explained on the companies house web site:
group - if use of this word implies several companies under one corporate ownership, then you will need to provide evidence of a parent and/or subsidiary association with two or more other British or overseas companies. If the name clearly shows that the company is to promote the interests of a group of individuals, then the name will normally be approved

wouldnt it be easier to change the domain name (point 'group' to 'groups' it)?

Unless you are complying with Companies House you have already broken the law and will need to delete the word group or groups altogether or associate the company with 2 others as per the requirements.
