View Full Version : How much should I pay for this website?

Hi

My website www.greenmums.co.uk (http://www.greenmums.co.uk) currently uses a shopping cart system (rubbish one!) which is closing down and I need to move to a different system.

The problem I have is that I can't just move shopping carts - I need to totally start from scratch and I've been quoted around £1300 for a site that looks like mine, using a different cart.

To put it bluntly I just don't have this money. So does anyone have any idea how I can do this for less? I've seen a thread on here before where people have recommended sites that are kind of 'off the shelf' and you have it designed to suit.

Can anyone point me in the direction of someone who does these:( please?

we provide these with a shopping cart for £649, (excluding hosting and domain) and can seo the site from scratch (what we prefer to do) from £89 per month.

If that fits more into your budget, let me know and we can speak in more detail.

Thanks.

Hi Greenmum,

I'm sure I've seen your web site before, its a really nice looking shop, may I ask why you are moving it?

There are several really good hosted eCommerce solution providers in this community including Phil at www.openmindcommerce.co.uk (http://www.openmindcommerce.co.uk) and of course our own hosted eCommerce service (http://www.internetretailer.biz).

You might also want to talk to Paul at www.awebapart.com (http://www.awebapart.com/), he does a customised version of osCommerce (I think that's the software?) which might suit your needs better.

I'd recommend drafting a list of must-have features that are essential to your business and a second list of nice-to-have features. Put this to several solution providers and make a decision from there.

There is no reason to be paying anywhere near £1300 for a really good shop with most of the features you want.

Thank you! I'm moving it purely because the cart I am using is closing down. I only had my website 6 months ago and I've not been able to get any contact from the cart provider for 3 months! A very bad choice on my web guys part but we wont go there....

Yes, I did think of Paul and have sent him a message...

Will do!

Thanks for the other offers guys, I'll have a look at your sites before I get back to you. Jdpos, what is your website by the way?

Hi greenmum,

I would recommend the Openmind commerce system too, used it for a clients sites recently and wwill definitely be using it again :) There's also a number of designers who can provide a design service to work with the OMC system.

Thanks,
Greg

The shopping cart provider ww.netplugin.com is closing.

Can't South West Net Solutions migrate you to another cart?

Otherwise, would replicating your site exactly but just integrating a new cart do the job?

We parted company a while ago....

Well that's what I thought but apparently this would be a very costly exercise and I've been told I'm better off starting again.

Green Mum, totally sympathise with your situation. We moved to Internet Retailer (http://www.internetretailer.biz/partner/qs_index.aspx) who has already replied to you (Quikshop) as we were unhappy with our shopping cart.

We was able to obtain an excel file of all our data title, description & price which Internet Retailer kindly uploaded onto our new site. We just had to upload the photo's which was a lot easier than having to load all the products again.

They have also been very supportive with the design www.totsntoys.co.uk (http://www.totsntoys.co.uk) (don't look at our signature as we can't change that!)

Hope you find an easy and cheap solution, just remember it is a good opportunity to review your products and design etc.

Regards
Tracy

I just don't have the time for that at the moment, as much as I woud love to learn those skills.

I've actually decided to go with David at Internet Retailer. He comes very highly recommended.

I think this kind of thing depends on the quality of work you are looking for. I think with everything you can spend as little as you want or as much as you want. If your not worried about service, Dont mind not knowing whats going on and just want it there then you can get it done for peanuts. If you want a perfect service that gives you support and explains things to you as well as producing a perfect project then you need to pay for it.
