A quick Google hasn't given me the answers I need so I'm turning to the UKBF community - what are the rules for setting up an "institute"?

Not sure what you are trying to do, but you may find the answer here (http://www.fsa.gov.uk/Pages/Doing/small_firms/MSR/index.shtml)

Thanks, I'll have a look at that.
There are Institutes for all sorts of groups of people - e.g. Institute of Directors Institute of Paralegals, etc. I'm trying to find information about setting up such an institute.

OK most of them are just normal limited companies.
Inst of Directors is a Company Incorporated by Royal Charter (England/Wales)
Inst of Certified Bookkeepers is a company limited by guarantee
VPA UK is a company limited by shares (I suspect you know this already  )
However if you look at appendix A of this Companies House booklet (http://www.companieshouse.gov.uk/about/gbhtml/gbf3.shtml) you will see that you can only use the name "Institute" with the permission of the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (the posh new name for the Department of Trade and Industry) as as it implies business pre-eminence or representative status

I am aware that VPA UK is limited by shares but this enquiry is not necessarily related to that company - I have lots of other clients.
Thanks for this information - that's really useful.
