Following on from reading the list of 101 ways to promote your website, I am here fresh from submitting an article on the threat to Sandalwood trees.

Flippant comment: Well it shouldn't make such darn good smelling incense then.

Seriously, that utterly sucks. I suppose because Incense is traditionally a spiritual or hippy accessory, it's easy to forget any environmental consequences. But thank you for bringing it to my attention.

Next question: How bad is the incense industry?

How bad? In which sense?

Environmentally, it depends what you buy, but as always, you get what you pay for. If you buy packs of incense sticks at 50p for a million sticks, you can be fairly sure there's not much thought for the environment gone into that packet.

The incense we sell (and there are other brands doing similar things) uses only recycled paper packaging and try and limit their environmental impact. However, all incenses (well, at least those that don't use chemicals to make the scent) use plants and resins, and all aromatherapy oils have to come from plants too, so I suppose it's about making sure the sources are managed and sustainable.

In terms of employment, I think a lot of incense is produced in less than ideal conditions (putting it politely). We selected ours because of the excellent working conditions.

take a look here (http://www.spiralling.co.uk/shop/shop.php?action=full&id=127) if you'd like to read more about it.

Thank you Nicola, that's good to know.
Once I've used up my wholesale supply of Ebay Nag Champa (cringe) I will look into better alternatives.

Thank you for the link, it's great, and I'm glad you put so much thought into the ethics of your business. Consider yourself bookmarked ;)
