Hi,
I am setting up a new on-line business and my research on website optimization tells me that to gain a high page rank I need to set up a lot of Incoming links to my website. This is the thing which puzzles me the most: How do I get incoming links which are not paid links or reciprocal links?

You will need something on a page which gets interest, such as a freebie offer or something useful. Then people are more likely to add posts on other websites telling others

I was planning to give quite a few freebies on my site, which people can download, as well as free entries to prize draws for people who recommend the site to friends.
However is there a way of convincing other sites to put links to mine? This is what I'm trying to understand the most and don't know how to do it.

Hi Jackie,
We have an article on link swapping (http://www.internetretailer.biz/partner/link_swapping_with_other_web_sites.aspx?qsaid=147) which might be of some use.
If your time is limited, one of the best techniques in improving a web sites position on the search engines is to increase the amount of relevant content in the web site.
One way to achieve this is through adding regular informative articles about the products you sell, or the services you offer through your web site.
Our article on Search Engine Marketing (http://www.internetretailer.biz/partner/search_engine_marketing.aspx?qsaid=146) (towards the bottom of the article) covers the main search engine optimisation techniques that you can do yourself, or perhaps commission one of the SEO bods in this community to do for you.
Hope this helps :)

Article marketing is one good way of getting inbound links, as has been mentioned above, and if you have a good blog people tend to link to it, including other blogs.
Also seek out some high quality free online directories...general business directories and also industry specific directories.
Best Wishes
Amanda
