I have just googled domain registration in HK and China but I do not know if the results are the proper authority and wondered if any one had done this?

I have just received this after visiting Shanghai music festival and do not know if it is a scam.

Dear CEO

We are Shanghai NET Network I T Co.,Ltd which is the domain name register center in China.
We have something need to confirm with you, we formally received an application on October 30 2007.
One company who called Wachovia Investment Company are applying for following:

Domain Names:
hofnote.cn
hofnote.com.cn
hofnote.net.cn
hofnote.biz
hofnote.tw
hofnote.hk
hofnote.mobi

Internet Brand Name:
hofnote

These days we are dealing with it, so we hope to get the affirmation from your company.
Please let someone in your company who is responsible for trademark or intellectual property rights contact us.
If there is any question, please contact us as soon as possible.

Best Regards,

It looks as though at least hofnote.cn is still available so hasn't been registered yet.

But I will rest easier when I have registered in HK and China at least one domain in each country.

Thanks from a panicking novice!

Make sure you use a reputable registrar company, some can be awful, others very good.

Your best bet is to use www.godaddy.com - Click on Domains, towards the top left of the home page, in the next box type in the name you want, then click the tiny triangle just to the right, that will drop down a long list of other country prefixes from around the world, choose the prefix you want and take it from there.

If you run into problems feel free to give me a shout and I'll do my best to help you out.

Godaddy.com is one of the most reputable domain name registrars, the only bane of their very low prices, is the number of click through screens you have to take to get to the final checkout.

Make sure you click on all the boxes correctly, to just buy the domain name, although of course you may wish to use them too, for hosting your website. The reason for this number of screens to wade through is because to balance their low prices, they will try to make you buy any number of add on services. Just look at each page carefully and you should do just fine.

All the best!

Seem to have a bit of deja vu about this thread. :|

Anyway, by all means use GoDaddy but bear in mind that they will only be able to handle the .com.cn not the true .cn.

We can get you a .cn and a .hk for about £40 each, and then build you a proper Chinese web site to go with it for a bit more on top........well, quite a bit more on top actually. ;)
