We have just started an online shop. We have paypal to take payment but would like to accept other forms. Any thoughts on the cheapest and the best ways to take credit card payments

Hi John have a look at Google checkout.
I'm glad you didn't put that signature in your thread about SEO yesterday as i would have thought you were joking.
Anyway do have a look at Google checkout as i have been told good things about it from several clients.

Are you using PayPal or PayPal Pro, Pro is quite good otherwise take a look at WorldPay or Google Checkout as above.

I'm going to keep doing this until someone takes heed and puts a sticky up with the above site, there seem to be more questions on here about merchant accounts than anything else!

Google Checkout is a fine free product (free until the end of the year) - but - you usually get what you pay for in this life.
I have tested it and it does what it says, but I'm not comfortable with the lack of telephone support when (inevitably) things go wrong
Cheers
