I don't know about some of you other guys and lasses out there, but all this newfangled terminology often reads like absolute doubledutch.

What on earth half the words are on about, is anyone's guess much of the time, and so many companies, saying, you need to be doing this, no you don't that doesn't work, you need this, not that, and around your mind goes in a complete whirl of jargon.

So, this thread has a two pronged approach to it, one to disseminate SEO language into plain old english, (glossary), that even an idiot like me can understand, and two describes the essential steps for beginners, in search engine optimisation.

Then when this thread runs out of steam, we evaluate the best and most simplest, plain english advice and post up a step by step guide that everyone can understand and act upon.

First of all though, can someone translate PR4 from PR8? Backlinks? Reciprocal links? Adsense, ppc, SERPS, Adwords, Anchor text, Blogging, Description metatags, Geo-targeting, Google analytics, Froogle, RSS - and a host of other 'words' please from gobbledegook into something at least more understandable? Then I might be able to choose which things I need to be working on in which particular order and get a fluid procedure in place.

All questions, no matter how dumb are more than welcomed here.

For those of you knowledgeable upon the subject, I cannot stress enough please, to keep your answers stupidly simple. I am so thick on this whole subject, it drives me nuts.

In advance, please do excuse if I ask, dumber than dumb questions.

Cheers!!

Not in simple language I'm afraid, hence the need to ask the question my friend.

I'm sure if I was to talk about nanotechnology, I might quickly lose you, typing it into google, I doubt you'd be much wiser.

Kindest regards.

PR4 from PR8?
PR = PageRank. 0 is poor 10 is very good. It's a measure of the importance of your site in Google's eyes. You get a higher PageRank for having good sites (sites with a good pagerank) linking to your site. Goes back to the notion of academic peer reviewed papers.

Backlinks?
Links into your site irrespective of whether you link to the site linking to you.

Reciprocal links?
You link to me I'll link to you. These links are of questionable value.

Adsense
Google's tool for allowing people with websites to allow Google to advertise on their site. You hav eseen this with am 'Ads by Google' logo next to them. Site owners get paid when someone clicks an adsense advert on their site.

ppc
Pay Per Click. The sponsored ads you see in a Google SERP. You can buy into these adverts and you pay if your advert is clicked.

SERPS
Search Engine Results Pages

Adwords
Google's brand of PPC

Anchor text
The anchor text or link label is the visible, clickable text in a hyperlink.

Blogging
the act of writing an online journal.

Description metatags
View the source code of a web page and you will see meta tags. Meta data is a data that describes other data. the meta for this page migh say "response to a question in a forum"

Geo-targeting
With AdWords you can target geographical areas where you want your advert to appear.

Google analytics
A powerful free tool for analysing the activity on your website. Visitor numbers, where they came from etc etc

Froogle
Google Product Search (formerly known as Froogle) is a price comparison service launched by Google

Here's another one...

Nothing to do with nanotechnology but a fair bit to do with html and seo, hope they help.

Many thanks for that, very much appreciated.

Hmmmmmmm, what's a hyperlink please as opposed to just a link?

And which of the above would you be concentrating on the most, if you were completely new to all of this? Further, how would you go about it?

If you can spare the time, it would be very much appreciated.

Btw, if any of you are interested in exchanging free marketing on my website, a prime position banner or two for example for some seo assistance, can we talk please and negotiate?

Thanks to another poster for pointing out too, the folly of putting duplicated content on your website, I will be cracking on with this shortly to adjust this in the few instances where, at first, I thought that this wasn't such a bad idea. Now, I know differently.
