Not talking about an online or virtual terminal, i mean the actual card machine swipe chip and pin thingey! :) All i'd want one for would be mail/phone payments, not people in person

I've done all my research on online stuff, now need to know what sort of money the physical terminals cost:

To set up?

To rent per month?

Fees charged per transaction?

Where do you rent from?

Have been advised that in some cases a terminal may be more cost effective than an online alternative. So if anyone here does rent one, could you post or PM with some details?

Many thanks

Hello,

We have a card terminal in the shop supplied by Natwest.

If you are not going to see anyone what is wrong with a virtual terminal.

Surely you only need a real terminal for face to face.

Also check out some of the affiliate schemes that are on offer.

They can make a large difference to start up and ongoing costs.

Costs are cheaper, in general, for actual terminals.

Been doing the rounds for all the virtual terminals etc.

My merchant account is with Streamline and the terminal with 123send. If you are an FSB member you get a discount on the rates although this also depends on the t/o.
You should check what you bank offers too, although there are only a handful of banks allowed to issue merchant accounts directly.

Have a look at this http://www.mobilepos.co.uk/

Credit cards on your mobile phone.
Okay for occasional payments. The java application is better option.
And I think - from memory - they chuck in a virtual terminal.
Note it is not the chip and pin terminal that I am suggesting.

The NMTF have a deal with it - so if it seems right check that out as it may make it cheaper.

Let us know what you conclude at the last.

Shop about: HSBC, Barclays, HBOS, Lloyds and RBS/Natwest all have merchant services. 123 send is a mobile solution, I'm assuming you would just need a stand alone terminal that plugs into a power point and telephone socket if it is for CNP transactions.

We got ours from Streamline - no set up fee and reduced monthly rental if you're a member of the FSB, who also do really good prices on (general) business insurance...

I have a mobile terminal from barclays merchant services. It accepts chip and pin and works on the vodaphone mobile network so is totally portable. It cost about £400. The downside is the battery is useless and only lasts for about 3 transactions. but as i have a 240v power supply in the van i just plug it in or use the customers power.
