Hi everyone!

There appears to be some real interest in 'optimising' websites; that is improving the content of your web pages to attract more visitors to your site.

I am not an SEO expert, but I do optimise websites for SMEs who cannot even look at professional SEO fees and the information below is working well for all the customers I have implemented it for.

If you are a small to medium business who cannot afford thousands of pounds per month for (seo) search engine optimisation fees; here is a few simple facts to help you on your way.

1. You need good optimisation code as follows:

<title></title> THIS IS WHERE THE TITLE OF YOUR PAGE GOES - KEEP IT SIMPLE!
<meta name="robots" content="all" />
<meta name="revisit-after" content="7 days" />
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1" />
<meta http-equiv="Content-Language" content="en-gb" />
<meta name="author" content="Iain Venn" /> REPLACE MY NAME WITH YOUR OWN OR THE AUTHOR OF THE CONTENT
<meta name="Copyright" content="Copyright (c) 2007 Go Create Design" /> AGAIN PUT THE NAME OF YOUR COMPANY OR THE COPYRIGHT OWNER
<meta name="keywords" content=" " /> PUT THE KEYWORDS HERE, BUT MAKE SURE THEY APPEAR ONCE EVERY 50 WORDS IN YOUR HTML TEXT
<meta name="description" content=" "/> TRY AND DESCRIBE IN 1 SENTENCE WHAT THE PAGE COVERS AND INCLUDE THE KEYWORD/S
<meta name="robots" content="index, follow"/> YOU CAN CHANGE THIS FOR EVERY PAGE YOU WANT TO DIRECT ROBOTS TO READ; DON'T USE SPACES IN PAGE NAMES
<meta name="googlebot" content="index,follow"/> SAME AS ABOVE

2. You need at least 100 words on each page - but you will need to check your competitors to see how much text they use - you might need to match them or even exceed what they are doing. Basic HTML text works well.

3. Check the structure of your website on Mozilla Firefox is GOOD. If it looks good, you have a well structured website. If things appear in different places and it seems a little jumbled, you have to sort out the glitches.

4. Share reciprocal links with companies who share a common purpose with you (not necessarily direct competitors) You link to them and they link to you - you don't need fancy graphics, plain html links are fine. If a company offers a product/service that might appeal to your customers, that's a good start.

5. If you really can't be bothered with all this and you would prefer someone like me to manage the process for you the going rate varies dependent on how much traffic (visitors) you wish to attract each month. Expect to pay anything from £40 per month ( 500 visitors per month ) to £100 per month ( 5000 visitors per month ) for SMEs.

I DON'T CHARGE FOR OPTIMISATION; I SIMPLY CHARGE AN ANNUAL FEE FOR DESIGN, BUILD AND MANAGEMENT.

I feel this is the future and a far better way to look after SMEs.

For any of you that want to get your hands dirty, this advice will work. If you get any major problems or have any questions, please let me know and I can update this again.

If there are any SEO experts out there that want to help us SMEs out, then please add to this thread.

Good advice but there is no substitue for having professional optimisation. A good professional company will submit your site to over 250 search engines on go live as well as continually updating the way that the site is optimised as the rules for optimisation today will not be the rules for optimisation tommorrow. We are happy to share all of the ways that we optimise sites with our clients and give regular anlaysis and reports to show what works - if you do not believe me ask Chris Kaday for all the info that I have shared with him today and he has not even agreed to use us yet!!!

If you wanted an extension on your house you would get a builder, if you need optimisation on your site you should get a profesional seo company and in terms of cost if the work deivers results it is an investment not a cost, we offer services ranging from £25 per month right up to £500 per month to cater for all requirements!

Thanks for the advice but I wanted to show the value of investing in a professional company.

I would certainly be interested in the lower-end fees you speak of - I could easily spend £25 a month less on ebay listings if it was guaranteed to increase my website sales. What I don't quite understand is why you need an ongoing seo payment, surely once a site is optimised, that should do the trick? What exactly does the monthly fee pay for?

The on going fee pays for the continued focus on your content. The rules for optimisation are continually changing and so the way the site is optimised needs to change in line with this. It also allows the search engine optimisation to develop as your business develops as you may wish to target new markets, new products etc.

Another reason is that most business who we begin SEO work with will bring pages and pages of "key phrases" this size of list must be tackled over time and not all at once as this could have negative effect, optimisation is about more than using meta tags, inks and key words as google and other engines have "wised up" to this and have specific criteria to search upon.

Another reason for continuous work is to stay ahead of your competitors, if you knock them off the top spot of google they will try to return the favour .

Please give me a call tommorrow if you would like to discuss this further.

Many thanks

Sorry to all regarding entire marketings sales pitch; if there are any experts out there willing to add to the code or give some simple tips for optimising small to medium business websites - this would still be very much appreciated.

Our learned friend would certainly do well to use the code supplied in my original thread.

If you have major ambitions to generate large numbers of (thousands, rather than hundreds) visitors to your website, you must seek the advice of companies who are well established and have a track record exceeding 5 years in website optimisation.

The code I have supplied can be installed by your web designer or yourself (if you are confident and have the time)

It's FREE and if you follow the simple instructions, expect to see increases in visitors within as little as 5 working days.

Have a good day!
