Anyone else use a Protx 3D Secure system for Phone orders?
How does it work with the actual 3D secure enabled?
Do you have to ask the caller for their password to complete the transaction? - seems a bit off to me to start asking passwords - may as well ask for their PIN number at the same time!!
I'm resisting switching on the 3D Secure ATM due to this.
Would appreciate any comments/experience ..
Cheers,
Rob

I thought that all phone orders had to go through the terminal thingy, thereby bypassing 3D secure - which is only applicable to internet orders.
This is a complete presumption btw!

I think you're right on that. The whole point of 3D is to create a liability shift to the card issuer.
But if they've nicked the card taking the order over the phone isn't going to help.

Yep 3D secure is only for ecommerce. You should have a separate Protx account for ecommerce and MOTO anyway so switching 3D on for ecommerce shouldn't affect phone orders.
Also if you don't have 3D secure on at the moment your account wont be accepting Maestro (unless you are with Lloyds Cardnet in which case there is an extension!)

Yup - they way it's setup people need 2 protx accounts, 1 for ecommerce and one for Mail Order Telephone Order accounts.
The first with 3D enabled, the second without (or at least set to process even if 3D fails)
For those with only 1 Protx account and taking phone orders as well as online orders, you need to set the system to still process the card even if 3D fails which makes the whole 3D process totally pointless.

Protx have just delayed the enforcement of MOTO as many e-tailers, us included didn't realise we had to have one. You can process cards through their site, via a log in, without needing 3-D secure. Does kind of make the thing a bit pointless, but at least if you're speaking to someone you can get some sense of whether they are genuine or not.

I can't comment on Protx specifically as we use Secure Trading. We've recently updated our site to include the 3D Secure facility, it's only for the e-commerce side. When taking payments by phone we simply use the Virtual Terminal, which of course doesn't ask for the clients 3D password.
Just as an FYI, only one account is needed with Secure Trading to process both kinds of payment.
Why is Protx so popular? We looked at them back in the day and their charging was nowhere near as flexible as SecTrad.

Sounds like Protx have made a right mess of enabling the 3D secure side of things. Worldpay did theirs back in June and it's been no problem at all. Everyone I know whose on Protx has had problems with the changes, one of my bead suppliers was having c50% of their orders fail and lost lots of business last week - they ended up processing my order offline through the phone terminal because my Maestro card wouldn't work on their online site - it was not able to even determine consistently what card type it was and kept reporting allsorts of odd messages.
Not been good publicity for them after their update failure hit the bbc news! http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6925991.stm mind you still more reports yesterday as well http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/08/08/protx_outage_analysis/
