View Full Version : Google v other search engines

I have just received a free web health check (that's what it was called - honest). It made interesting reading, in that I have 1st page rank for google but figured badly on other search engines.
Perhaps all you computer techies can explain why. Do you have to optimise sites so they are all search engine friendly? I thought if you acheived good ranks with google, you would do well on all sites.
This really does give me a headache!

Hi Nina, i'm afraid to say that all the major search engines use different search algorithms which are all looking for different aspects. So when optimising your site you do have to take that in to account. Although if i had to choose one search engine to be ranked well on the SERP's then it would have to be Google.
If you would like a free SEO report/proposal for your site taking all major search engines in to account then just om or email me.
Best regards

Thanks Chris.
I have just stumbled upon bulk uploads from google, and tried to follow their instructions for that. I have no idea what they are, what purpose they serve, but anything free with google has to be followed doesn't it? Any ideas on that one?

Hi Nina you will have to clarify what you mean by bulk uploads and where you found them for me to comment.

I assume you mean bulk uploads on Google Base? It is worth doing, just read all the instructions on the Google help pages - I've just done it and it's already brought a few people to the site when they search the Google products database (and sometimes they come up at the top of the web search pages if the search is specific enough). Make sure you give as much detail as possible to get your products to the top of the searches.

Oops, just had a look at your web page and realised you're not offering products, but services! I'm not sure how/if the bulk upload feature would work with this, but you can still upload services onto google base.

Pelenna,
I have no idea what google means when it asked for text files etc. I rather think that is why I work with animals and not computers. It's so fruatrating though, since in order to play with the big boys, I need to have some basic knowledge of google.

Hiya Nina,
Don't worry, I was exactly the same, but after several days of trawling the Google help centre and help forums, I managed to upload my bulk upload with no errors (miraculously!). You need a Google account, and if you have less than ten items to post then it's probably easier to do them one at a time - there's a whole help section on this too, but I haven't done it myself. I did my bulk upload just using a spreadsheet in excel, then saving as tab-delimited text. I went 'eh?' when it said that, but it does have instructions on how to save as this as well!
I'd recommend just getting an account and reading all the relevant help files first - apologies if you've already done this!

Hi again,
I do have a google account, and I am trawling though the various options. I have only just discovered why my map is not showing. I had forgotten to list my area's. Tut. I rather think I need to buy a google head lol

Oh yeah, I lied when I said I had no errors - it all uploaded fine but I had done it through Google.com, not .co.uk, so all the price were in dollars! One to watch out for.....

Naah, it's all a massive learning curve isn't it? I went out celebrating the other day as I've got a position 1 on Google for one of my key terms - after about 6 months of diy seo! This forum really helps though :)

Diffrent search engines rate pages using diffrent method, so if you optermise you website for google it may not work for yahoo.
