I really feel the need to add one thing here, which I have noticed on a number of posts on here.
"you will need a designer who is a great SEO"
SEO has a "design aspect" to it, but it is not the be all and end all, and does not end with on-page development tweaks to the website. There are significant offpage factors to cater for (which include no aspect of design - ie link building), server implications (301's etc), some of which I would doubt a designer would have an understanding of (much the same as I dont have a thorough understanding of pantones).
Just a thought....

I agree with Pete Young, why do you rely heavily on a great SEO?
Well I do find some amazing SEO but still its your website so you yourself should take care of it and learn from a great SEO.
Unless you have 10 websites and have very little time, then SEO will be an acceptable solutions

Erm......
I was actually picking on the designer being the primary consultant as regards the SEO. Personally, I would suggest some of the best SEO'ers/SEM's come from technical or marketing background rather than design.
SEO or rather Online Marketing should be an integral part of most web commercial projects. At the end of the day what use is a site if it cant be found.
