Can anyone give me some feedback on x-cart, we're currently using oscommerce but I'm not fond of the way each contribution is made by different developers and thus aren't always compatable with each other.
We're looking for something that is fairly easy to customise and expand as the site grows. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Integrating different osCommerce contributions can be a nightmare. For the ones that appear incompatible with each other, you really have to get into the mindset of the original developers of the different contributions and osCommerce itself and do some developing yourself to get the contributions to work with each other. That's why I don't recommend the osCommerce DIY route unless you are a developer, or you can pay for a developer.
The most difficult task we've had so far, difficult but not impossible, was getting 2 major contributions that affect the same area of osCommerce working together. That is contribution 888 QTPro (product option level stock control - e.g. how many shirts product X of size Y of colour Z do we have in stock) with contribution 160 Option Type Feature (allowing different user input text boxes for product options, e.g. for name engraving, for custom slogans for t-shirt printing, for for greetings messages on presents, etc).
However there are other ways of getting an osCommerce shop with contributions working, without resorting to development yourself or paying developer rates...
If you are looking for an osCommerce shop with important contributions already integrated in, where there is only one supplier taking responsibility for the support, maintenance and improvement of the custom osCommerce system (including integrating with osCommerce v3 base when it is ready), then please have a look at our hosted managed service. (Of course, a lot depends on whether we have the contributions already installed that you require, if not still give us a call, the contribution might be on our roadmap in the future).

We are implementing X-Cart for two clients just now. We've used many systems over the years and we've found X-Cart hugely powerful, easy for clients to use and very flexible because of the SMARTY templating system it uses.
Worth every penny.

Xcart is not a bad product but needs a little work to get it right. I have used it on a lot of projects but i do feel its convertion ration is not as good

x-cart is not a bad choice but it still has a lot to catch up with. Why don't you take a look at Magento? in case you need to switch - try cart2cart service. it'll move you automatically shopping-cart-migration.com

If you have specific requirements in mind, you cant really beat a bespoke Ecommerce website.

I use X-Cart and love it, it does take some work to get things running the way you want and you will more than likely need to spend £££ on mods but it is a very powerfull piece of software when installed and configured correctly. The X-Cart team constantly release upgrades and some very powerfull functions are planned for release towards the year end which will take it to a whole new level.

I've only ever heard good things about x-cart. One of my colleagues uses it for a site here: www.cglass.co.uk
Have you looked at Magento as an alternative? I'm in the process of revamping a site with Magento and it's bloody fantastic!
