Women On The Ladder of Success!
KIS Training launches the WINTO (Women Into Non-Traditional Occupations) programme
Recent reports have highlighted that occupations such as construction, IT, Motor Vehicle, Media, IT, Security or Emergency Services have traditionally had a much higher male employee ratio than average. It appears that once a job has become traditionally gender-orientated then it becomes difficult to challenge or change perceptions.
For example, the construction industry has around 38% vacancies, compared to the 20% national average. Carpenters and joiners are in most demand, followed by plumbers, bricklayers and technicians.
The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) found that the industry requires about 86,000 new people each year to meet skills shortages and yet women represent just 1% of its workforce in manual trades.
The plans for the 2012 Olympic Games will put further pressure on the industry as a whole in the coming years. In this context, it is essential to look at ways of attracting more women to the industry and to consider what changes may be necessary to encourage their participation in those trades.
Breaking down a gender segregated market is crucial as it can offer new career opportunities and reduce the skill shortage in those industries.
As part of the overall strategy, Keeping It Simple Training (http://www.kistraining.co.uk) has developed a comprehensive support package for Women Into Non-Traditional Occupations (http://www.winto.org)(WINTO).
Funded by the London Development Agency (LDA), the programme supports women living or working in North, Central or East London to set-up and grow their own business in sectors such as:
Painting & decorating
Electrical, gas or heating installation
Carpentry and joinery
Plumbing or welding
Transport of commercial driving
IT
Media
Security
