I have just come back from a tax enquiry for a client and HMRC have requested details of a transfer out of my clients account - they have the sort code and account number

My client cannot recall whos account it is

He may do if he knows what bank it is

Does anyone know where there is a sort code directory ?

All bank sort codes start with the same 2 digits, all HSBC ones start with 40-49

07 is a Nationwide one:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sort_Codes_of_the_United_Kingdom

If you phone Nationwide, I'm sure they'll tell you which branch that is

As an hsbcnet.com user I get that for free - sort code lookups I mean.

But isn't it outrageous that the banks don't provide this information for free? Don't we pay enough in charges?

Gives you a complete breakdown for free of the start of the sort codes and which bank they are including the Scottish and Belfast clearings system.

They may all start with 40, but they certainly don't all start with 40-49.

They may all start with 40, but they certainly don't all start with 40-49.

What I meant was they all start with either 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48 or 49

77 91 13 - Lloyds TSB
400727 - HSBC

If you give their call centres a phone they may be able to tell you exact branch info.

There is an actual "directory" issued every year with all the sort codes, addresses & tel numbers etc.... I used to ask my bank for a copy (because I used to process a lot of BACs payments and needed the info) and they used to automatically let me have one every year.

I have not needed it in the last 3 years, so no longer get them. I presume you can still get them?

77 91 13 is Lloyds at Kilburn

40 07 27 is HSBC at Willesden Green

Just type the sort codes into http://www.postcodeanywhere.co.uk/demos/happy/validator.aspx and hit validate - a very useful resource
