I want to soften the 'attitude' of the "BUY NOW" button to something more like "ADD TO BASKET": something that is less committal to the purchaser than "BUY NOW!!"
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

How about "Can You Put this aside for me?"
That's what my wife says whenever she's clothes shopping... Might be a bit lengthy for a button tho :)

Yeah... I couldn't get "Sod it, put it on one of your cards" on a button either!:)

Maybe try putting up a "Buy now" (goes straight to check out) & a "Put in Basket" (allows one to continue browsing) up together. Then you can analys which has a higher conversion rate.
What about a "Charge on ex-husbands card" button?

Like Donnash says, try one for a while and then the other and see which converts best but I wouldn't have both at the same time as it's just going to confuse people.

It wouldn't confuse people as they have clearly two different functions. The "Buy now" button would take you to a "check out" page. The "Add to basket" button just add the item to a basket, and allows the user to continue browsing.
