Hi, does anyone know the legal requirements and costs involved in starting a cupcake business from home?

Hi Laura

Cupcakes seem to be all the rage at the moment. I did a quick check on Google and came up with this article in the Daily Mail from 2010 - sounds something similar to what you want to do. I only scanned the article but have a look and see if it gives you any tips.

You may need to look at H&S issues - food preparation, storage, that kind of thing - other than that GOOD LUCK for the future.

p.s. did I see on Facebook that you are in Portaferry? I am in Newtownards so when you get those cupcakes baked let me know!!!!

Have you done your market research and seen how much products will cost, where to get them and how you're going to sell them?

They are very popular, but there is very steep competition!

I've researched it for a few months and I might give it a go I'm not sure yet. I'm just about to start test trading for 6 months through the job centre and I'll be making wedding stationery, if I make a profit on that I'd like to invest in starting a cupcake business.

Thanks for the links :) I'm in Newtownards too!

Your local Enterprise centre should be able to help you with some mentoring.
I use the one at Dundonald and they have been great.

Laura - I did the Go For It programme back in 2006 and found it very useful. They are a real friendly bunch and they cover lots of topics for setting up on your own. They operate from Jubilee Road (on your doorstep) you should give them a call.
