Networking has nothing to do with selling it is about building long term relationships.

If your intention is to pitch to loads of business owners at networking events it will be a waste of time for you.

The purpose of networking is to find out how you can help someone and then help them. And by that I don't mean selling the idea of reducing their telephone bill.

There are loads of free networking events, however the best ones with the serious networkers who will be willing to help you will not necessary be free.

You can go to many of these organisations a couple of times for the price of the breakfast, and see whether you like them.

If you are serious about networking as a long term marketing strategy you will need to join organisations and pay for the quality networking.

Networking is a valuable tool in any business's marketing tool box.
I agree with your point about being a potential waste of time, but if you've got the right head on, and don't try and sell, but offer advice or solutions to problems, people do like that type of advice. It takes time to build to a sale though, but at least the brand is building while you do it.
