When will there be one??? If we can't do it on this site, how about someone setting up a sister site?

Not convinced that's a good idea. Since membership is free, you'll get a whole slew of companies that will never contribute, but will become a member to be in the directory.
I don't think an off site directory would be a bad idea, probably best manually edited so that companies that want listings can be confirmed as regular contributors. I may consider doing that, bit it's a little pointless without a few lnks to it.

you could perhaps rank the companies by contribution to the main forums when people search or do listings. or perhaps have a 'respect' system like some forums so that comments people like get ranked as 'contribution' rather than just spamming the forums with comments.

You could restrict listings only to people who have posted in the forum a certain number of times. Should get rid of most of the spammers.

On the contrary - it will only encourage them!

I tend to agree. The fifteen posting rule seems only to encourage pointless postings including greeting people in the introduction area that have been members longer than the OP posting the agreement.
If you were going to limit a listing based on contributions, I think it would have to be manually edited to use human judgement on whether someone is a spammer or not.

If we had a Directory on here people would just submit details and sit back without contributing. I would rather contribute and enable other members to leave feedback about me/us

That's why I suggested an offsite approach may work. Equally though, without some links to it (if offsite), it will have negligible value.

The forums are manually edited anyway aren't they? I've not noticed a huge amount of spam on these boards, I have to say. A directory would be really useful so in my opinion it's worth doing.
I think a restriction to users who have already posted a certain number of times is far less likely to 'encourage' spammers than a free-for-all.

Actually there IS a members directory - searchable by industry.
It's REALLY badly linked to (hard to find) and maybe theres a way we can link better to the search facility.
Each member can allocate themselves an industry sector (or two I think) in their user control panel
Heres the link (http://www.ukbusinessforums.co.uk/forums/memberlist.php?do=search)
You can sort the search (options at bottom of the screen) by last visited or post count etc etc
Hope this helps,
Rob

You don't notice a lot of spam because the mods are very swift at removing it. Those of us who are on here several times a day see quite a bit but it gets taken off very fast.

Rob,
I tried to update my profile to include a brief summary of my company. The system rejects it because it requires my year of birth (which it previously did not). Is there any way I can keep my birthday in the profile without the year? (As an old fogey, I'm sensitive about my age. :) )

You actually have the choice to hide your age in your profile, and not show the year, it just shows your date of birth as a date in the members calender.

Maybe in the Member list if there was an area to describe product/ services then it would be easier to search? A lot of people don't seem to have a industry listed either.

Quite amusing really, because if you select your industry then it enables potentional customers to find you, yet people dont update their profile with this information!

I would like an industry listing of "Detective Agencies". Is that possible?
