Hi
Say you had a shop that sold lots of small items. Is there any software you can get, so when you sell an item, you can put it in your computer and at the end of the week, your computer can tell you how much stock you have sold and how much to order.
Thank You

Yes any entry level accounting package will do that, Sage Instant for example is £99. You need to be really dilligent though and make sure you keep levels up-to-date which is where a bar code reader comes in. Your next step after that is tracking individual customers rather than just putting everything through a 'CASH' sales ledger account. Have fun!

I thought Sage was for book keeping, I just wanted the stock take bit?
Thank You though, I didn't think of sage.

Hi Jayne,
Quickbooks and MYOB are also good packages, if slightly easier to use than Sage IMO.

Hi Jayne,
The reason most people tend to link their stock system with their bookkeeping/accounts is to prevent having to enter information twice.
With a good package you should be able to manage the whole process without having to use lots of different systems. If you already have purchased an accounts package, I would suggest investigating what that can do first.
As mentioned already the big player in this market in the UK is Sage. My personal preference that I would recommend having a look at is Mamut. This has a built in web shop function (for trading online) and a full contact management system (CRM). It is also fully scalable as your business grows. If you would like a free demo copy PM me your contact details and I will arrange one for you.
Declaration of interest: We are Mamut resellers, as well as resellers for Sage and Quickbooks.

Jayne,
As other posters have mentioned all entry-level accounting systems are integrated and cover everything. Your choice will probably come down to whatever package your accountant is using. I always mention Sage because they are the dominant player, I do alot of work with Sage but Im not a reseller so have no affinity to their products, its just most accountants use it!

Thank You everyone.
I never do my books on a computer, I use Everite books (real paper), so I only wanted the stock list bit. You see if my computer blows up, all I'll loose is a few stock lists and my book work is safe. I still don't trust computers 100%...lol

Hi Jayne,
Do you have a database application (Access or Filemaker Pro), if so you could probably create your own stock system.

I used to use Sage to do this.
I didn;t know Quickbooks could be used to do this. How can you get this to work in the same way as sage?

I don't need it just yet, doing some homework. Thanks everyone. I'll see if I have that file creator in my computer.
