And this is aimed more at designers than developers.

Have you ever turned down work becasue you couldn't do what the client asked technically speaking?

What do you do when someone asks for something that you can't do ?

Hi

I can do everything! ha ha

With websites, if I come across something tricky then I teach myself how to do it. For example, I had been putting off learning about full CSS designed sites for a while, then one day decided I better learn how to use it. I started off with a new clients site, it was only a simple site really, and did the full thing in CSS. If I came across something I couldn't do I googled it and usually found out in a few minutes. As a last resort I posted on one forum for a part of it and even that was sorted within an hour or so.

I have since conquered css layouts and have 're-built' my full computer support website below in css.

I have turned down work because I have looked over requirements and decided it was going to be too tricky, not beyound my knowledge base, just didn't think the hassle was worth the pay.

My thoughts are that I'd rather learn something then pass the work on to somebody else, as its a service I can then offer future clients.

Regards

Darren

what if time was an issue?

Actually you do say 'if it's not worth the hassle' that is a relative term I guess

Still got a bit to learn on css but you're going in the right direction which is good. Try geming up on positioning next :)

Hi

Yeah haven't really got my head around positioning yet, managed to get by so far. I'm sure in the not too distant future I'll have another afternoon spare to figure that out.

With regards to the time issue, I build into my quotes how long something will take me, if I know there is something to learn to complete the job I might build in a few extra hours.

I do feel I have a fairly good grounding on most aspects of work I would normally undertake though so its not much of an issue.

I always aimed to do more development work than design back in my freelance days but have to say that there was never a time critical piece of work that required skills beyond my own that I was unable to take on due to lack of skills.

Certainly there were jobs requiring significant flash development that I was approached to do which were probably beyond my skill set but I declined the work on the basis that I didnt "do" flash
