Hello, not sure how to set up a poll! - but please, post a quick reply giving your response:

What prompts you to buy a beauty or make-up item?
a- recognisable brand name
b- read a review in mag or paper
c- friend's recommendation
d- just liked the look of it

Would very much appreciate your view - currently monitoring a beauty site and wondering how the rest of you girls feel.

thanks,
anna

When I am looking to buy make up, I have to be honest, I pay attention to how attractive the packaging is. I know it's wrong because the product is all that matters, but most women can't help it. We want to buy something pretty and attractive. Also, I look to see if the makeup is in my shade. I am African American in live in the US. Now for example, Rimmle is a brand that I enjoy. I enjoy Rimmel because it is a fun brand and they're kohl liners and mascaras are the best. On the other hand, I can't wear Rimmel foundation because they don't offer a lot of shades here in the US. Maybe it's different from Britain, I don't know. Also,I desire high quality makeup. I want something highly pigmented, long lasting, and true to color.
I hope this helped you out.

C & D! I absolutely buy something if it looks pretty. Or at least I wouldn't buy something if it looked unattractive.

Nice doesn't necessarily have to be frilly and pink, for example, Clinique, Clarins etc all have very plain branding and products but people continually buy them. The packaging is attractive, and pleasing, without being buys and fussy.

Hope that helps,

Susan

Secret option E: habit. I've been using Max Factor for years and just automatically head to their counter in the store when it's time for new make-up.

As to why I picked it in the first place: it was the only company at the time selling a light enough shade of foundation. All the others made me look orange!

ps Have just noticed this thread was started in 2006! I'm guessing Copyqueen has already completed this assignment. MaryAnne, why did you start it up again??

For Lips: Rose-tinted Vaseline (Smells amazing, and colours yr lips as well as looks after them, also cheap!)

For eyes: Max factor mascara false lash effect
& Rimmel Kohl eyeliner pencil in brown

Also Baby wipes....as weird as it sounds.....works out cheaper than buying proper make up wipes and work really well!

Loreal el'nett hairspray.....

i better stop now.
(:

A, D, B, C for me in that order although I am quite boring and tend to buy the same stuff for ages when I find something I like until I can't get hold of it anymore and then I have to buy about 5 eg. lipsticks and try them all out until I find one which is the right shade.

Rimmel because it is a fun brand and they're kohl liners and mascaras are the best..

Agreed - I have never found a better mascara anywhere - but I would never buy their foundation either - this is where I feel I have to spend a lot more money!

The only product which doesn't fall into that category is fake tan. But hey, smelling of raw potatoes is the price to pay for that golden look.

First of all, it has to be A! Why would you put unknown company cosmetic product on YOUR SKIN?

Then, I don't care about mags or my friends, as my friends have various different skin types, so what works for them, not necessarily works for me!

And than: E - try and find most suitable for my skin!

Nice packaging is a plus! ;)

It is really depend upon the product, sometimes because of brand name I get interest in buying the product and if the review in magazine or newspaper is more attractive then it also make me to buy the product. Friend's recommendation effect me less because their choice and their needs can be different then mine so it really effect very less to me. D never applied in my case.

This is a 4 year old thread that's been resurrected, I think the makeup might have dried up a bit in the meantime. Does nobody here read the thread dates?:D
