Just wanted to introduce. After careful consideration i started my own Locksmith Business in Birmingham company called M T Locks Ltd to date things are going reasonably well but like any new business i need to get my self established within Locksmith trade. I would appreciate any advice from anyone regarding sales/marketing in regards to building the business and gaining more work. We are speaking to estate/letting agents., have signed up with several baliff companies. M T Locks Ltd is currently being adveristed across all the free listing sites as well as having our own website and Google and Yell.com. We have just signed up to go into the Birmingham Yellow Pages which i believe is a must for any one in the Locksmith trade?
We've done some leaflet drops, have been handing out business cards and sent a mailing to over 500 different companies.
Any advice any of you may have would be greatly appreciated!

Buy yourself a copy of BS regulations for PAS024. Specifically look into anti-snap, anti-bump and anti-drill features on hardware. The locksmith who can crack the future range of hardware will come out on top :)

This post may be a little late. I am about to set up as a Locksmith in the North East and have the advantage of owning a hardware store. I get asked all the time for a good locksmith so decided to start it my self.
Something you could try is go to your local hardware store and the like ask to leave a few business cards/fliers there and put a poster in there window.
Have you thought of purchasing a Key cutting machine? these can be put in a van and you can cut keys there and then? We offer a key cutting service in store and we cut countless keys. also if you work 24hours a good extra would be a 24hour boarding up serivce?
I hope some of these thought help in some way, how is the business going?

My advice?
1) Make sure you look after all existing customers. I don't just mean service them when they call. I mean call them. Offer them exclusive offers, annual lock checks (opportunities to upsell) etc
2) Exclusive guarantee. Want the work? Offer a solid peace of mind guarantee to all customers. Something out of the norm. Something better than your competitors
3) Think of value added services that you can add to your business. e.g. lock check. lock servicing. Door security audits, subscription based services

i know there are a quite a few lock making businesses in willenhall not too far from you, contact them and offer your services in you area as a 'sub-contractor' or just arrange meetings with them and build relationships.
hope this helps :)
