I left the force's in January to set up a business. I would ideally like to rent some premises as it gives a more authentic feel and gives a company more of a presence.

I am in a situation where as I need to stay at home for safety reasons concerning my 10 month old child and his mother who is very ill.

Is working from home bad for business or would it be wise to include these details within my company profile or somewhere within my website?

Appologies for the spelling mistakes, mavis beacon taught me to type this fast, didn't say it would help me spell words as fast as i type them.

Hiya:)

it all depends on the type of business you will be running from home.
for example: web design, writers, hand made designs are all types of work that can be done anywhere... if you are expecting customers to come to the work place, it would be best to setup an office - otherwise people might not take you seriously.

As above, it all depends on your business type. Personally I wouldnt put it in your company profile unless you are aspiring to create a "home grown" or family business type image.

If you are working from home you need to do a lot of checking regarding your mortgage/ rental agreement, home insurance, council tax etc all of which can be affected by running a business from home

It is a 24/7 courier service and I currently use self employed drivers this gives me the opportunity to run the business as effectively as possable. Clients would not want to visit my premises but if they request to see me i will not hessitate to turn up at my clients premises or hire a meeting room for an hour. Where if asked I would inform them of the problem with getting premises.

Thanks for the advise Astaroth,

It has taken me 5 months to put this business in place with the help of various government bodies and charities. Im pretty much sure everything is in order. Ill just live in hope.

I was a Driver Lineman in the royal signals which included setting up field telephone systems, Servicing and inspecting veh's etc etc upon which i progressed to an acting Snr transport manager.

I think working from home is becoming more and more acceptable. I am a Virtual Assistant. I normally tell people that I work from my own, fully-equipped office but if anyone asks "Do you work from home?" I give them an honest answer and so far I haven't had a bad reaction. I actually think it can work to my advantage because I basically live "on-the-job" and can therefore offer more flexibility to my clients.

One thing you might want to consider is having a separate phone number for the business. This could be a non-geographic number (0845 / 0870) or just another number.

That way - if you do get your own premises you can move the business number without having to change your home phone number! If you have a separate phone it also means that you can see quickly whether it is a business or personal call.

When i worked from home i used MailBoxes etc. to handle my post, with the business address something like 'Business ID Solutions, Office 2, Silk House, Macclesfield, SK11 6JL', i feel it made my business look alot more professional. Theres also some excellent call handling services out there too.

I work from home.I usually visit clients in their home, but if they want to visit me, I hire an office at my local enterprise. I think certain companies look OK working from home...... property development company doesn't. But to be quite honest, its not worth my while relocating to premises because most of my business is done in Bulgaria.

I actually enjoy working from home more than at the office. It does break-up the day, but because the day is broken up, I'm sure I got more owrk done whilst working from home most of the time. However, since getting an office, I've had an increase in enquiries, got to know a lot more people, and had far more clients just willing to pop in for 5-10 minutes to discuss things. Meetings are a lot easier and I can arrange them without any hassle instantly.
