As TAS seems to be the only accounting software with its own dedicated forum here at UKBF is it safe to assume that it is ideal for a new start-up like me?

I see that you can get the basic package for free so that is a real bonus - IF the software does what it is supposed to.

So can I ask you TAS users to let me know whether you would suggest I give it a whirl or do you wish you had focused on another package rather than TAS?

Finally, is it possible to run the accounts for two separate businesses from the same copy of TAS?

There is a bit more about accounting software options in the thread below. I have mentioned few free options.

You should look at your other software you use for your business to see if there is a possibility for integration with accounting software. If you are using CRM, email marketing or e-commerce than online options are the best choice.

I suspect that the TAS forum presence here is a commercial arrangement between TAS and the forum owners, rather than endorsement by forum contributors.

Nevertheless I don't hesitate to recommend, having used it since the last century, and remain a happy user. I originally chose it for two reasons:

Correcting mistakes is easy, you just edit entries. It didn't make you jump through reversing journal hoops to correct mistakes. An important consideration as one will make mistakes, particularly when you start off.

At the time, it was the only software that could cope with changing VAT from Cash Accounting to accrual reasonably easily. At that time Sage would have required re-entry of every transaction of the current year from scratch to achieve that.

Probably those key criteria are no longer true as there is much good software about, but TAS remains easy to use, and I've seen no reason to change.

I stopped paying for support in 2005 as I saw no need to. The software works almost faultlessly, and I've used it long enough to know how to deal with any oddities that (very rarely) arise.

[As an aside I also got heartily sick of the endless sales push of upgrades I didn't need from the Sage people who bought TAS. Now I'm no longer a support customer they leave me alone]

In answer to the multi-company question, yes you can, provided you have the right licence. I don't know whether the free version allows multi-company, I would doubt it.
