I wanted to start a thread just to test something out really. It's pretty plain from my other posts and from my website that I am involved in 'business development' for small businesses in the West Midlands. What I want to know from you is what your definition of 'business development' is? How do you do your business development at the moment and what does it entail?

That kind of information would be good and we can use this as a space to share ideas and see what's working for other businesses.

Business development is the process and activity focusing on enabling the marketing function of a business to actually bring in sales conversions. In our view we see marketing as quite broad and scattered whereas business development is more about building and maintaining strategic relationships. A decent and effective business development manager should not only increase sales through the current customer database but will also ensure new customers are coming on stream.

Top marks, Will. Not really sure if I was hoping someone would quote my own website but it's a good start for a discussion!
