Do you think a bartering system like ebay would be good? If you could do all three barter, auction and buy at fixed price, so you can always get a good deal. what do you think? I think it would be great for students too with little money, as well as exchanging business services. Your thoughts please :)

I REALLY like that idea. I had a hunch something like that existed already but I don't think anyone has got to the exposure level of ebay yet...
Personally I think a business oriented approach to begin with would be most sensible.
Good luck!

well something like this would require a lot of support, any idea where to get it? :p - and i'd need feedback from people like what categories to have, if we have the business services approach we need categories for that

Well I think first thing you need is your "engine". So I would start searching for a pre-written script or something like that. I think CGI or PHP scripts exist for auction sites - so whether a framework exists for barter sites I don't know.
You need to work out your business model. Do you charge for a post (i.e. offer to barter) or is it advertising or what? Once you have that sorted and monetisable then you need to basically post, market, advertise the hell out of it and get people going.
Best,

It's not going to be a forum, more a system that works like ebay, I have the domain and everything setup.

It might work for B2B; not sure about C2C or B2C though; we have an unofficial barter club in our village - you need t shirts printing for your gardening business - oh great, it just so happens that I need the lawns cutting at the offices........ Works well!

If anyone is serious about setting up this facilitythen I can assist. I was the MD of Bartercard in the UK, USA and NZ. Bartercard is an AIM listed company. I have seen many fail and know how the successful ones work. I cant assist directly as I signed a non compete when I resigned in Feb 2006 to form my own company.
I can steer you away from the traps and provide a lot of advice.
Please feel free to call me on 07909 975 491 or email me at ianjones at mybusinessmates.com

I havent used it yet but a friend of mine did ask me to look at united-auctions.com or was it auctions-united.com, lol, I cannot remember. Anyhow this site offers free cyber cash on registration.
And honestly this site is nothing to do with me.
