Homer J Simpson

Doesn't seem to be very active in the Wales thread. Just wondering how many are from Cardiff/South Wales and why we don't seem to post much in here.

Steve Thornbury
4th January 2011, 10:24
Once you have figured that out, maybe you could give me next weeks Lottery numbers!!!

OldWelshGuy
4th January 2011, 10:25
maybe because business is business and there are very few issues that relate purely to Wales?

Homer J Simpson
4th January 2011, 10:31
Maybe there should be a feature or directory of users which shows location as well as what line of business they are in. Would make networking easier.........

Homer J Simpson
4th January 2011, 10:33
Once you have figured that out, maybe you could give me next weeks Lottery numbers!!!

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.

They've got as much chance as any other to come up :D

Hi Homer,

I asked a similar question not long ago but it still remains a mystery!

Homer J Simpson

Yeah, seems odd.

I just realised that my profile didn't include my location so have just updated it.

I'm in Cardiff, been on the forums for a couple of years but haven't had any time spare in the last few months.

I think a lot of members on here are see this as a way to promote their business and the nationwide forums get the most exposure.

Does seem that Wales is quieter than the other forums though. We're meant to be good at talking!

Homer J Simpson
4th January 2011, 23:50
Yes, appriciate that many would want the most exposure for their business, but from a networking side of things, I'd like to think a few would want to get together, have a coffee and a chat.

Nice to see a few from and near to Cardiff. Has anyone ever met anyone else from these forums ?

bluestagstudio
5th January 2011, 08:09
Don't think I've ever met anyone from the forums (not knowingly!!) but worked with a couple of members before.

I think a Cardiff meet is a good idea!

Any excuse for a coffee and 5 minutes out of the office!

ChrisAITY

Fellow Cardiffian :) well Vale of Glamorgan but close enough.. Never really looked in this section of the forum before..

Well that's at least 3 people! This thing could be big.

Any more want to join the cool crew?

Jim2k
5th January 2011, 14:29
I usually get booted out of the cool crews, but put me down for a Cardiff meet. Met a couple of the South Wales guys on here and each of them to a man is a scholar and gentleman!

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.

But a far lower probability :)

OldWelshGuy
7th January 2011, 08:21
equal probability, the laws of stats say so.

JayP
7th January 2011, 12:02
A common misconception im afraid... 'Ahem' *puts on his teachers voice* ;)

The probability of the numbers as individuals being picked out are equal, this is true. If you put the numbers 1 - 49 in a hat for example the chance you pick out 1, 2, or 3 is exactly the same as picking out the number 47, 48, 49 or any number in between, however, the probability of picking out number 1, then 2, then 3 etc is far far higher - much the same as the probability of tossing a coin and getting 20 tails in a row, each individual toss has the same 50-50 chance but probability would mean this is very unlikely to happen 20 times in a row, your more likely to throw a few heads in there somewhere.

Admittedly the lottery do not have to pick them out in the same order, they could be pulled out as 3, 1, 5... etc. but there is still a higher probability that they will be 6 'more' random numbers.

Hence why (without research) this has probably never happened in the history of every lottery draw around the world.

Its like the probability of Man U winning their next game is very high, so high you wouldnt get great odds at a bookies, but if you placed a bet on them winning their next 100 games the probability of this happening is much lower, hence the bookies are willing to make it look more attractive by offering you a higher return if it happens.

:)

Not been online for a while, seems there are quite a few of us and a few interested in meeting up to.

Sadly, I can't organise this and am not online too much these days as am basically re-doing the whole house, re-skim, re-paint, re-tile, new bathroom, new kitchen, floor tiles and wood flooring to be done.

Making the most of the sales and buying it all up and then spending a month or two getting it all done.

Hey Andrew, I see you are from Cowbridge. I know that my question does not exactly belong here, but, can you please recommend me some cheap hotel suggestions in your area. I need to find a hotel in Cowbridge, for next month, and I've been trying to find one on my own, but I haven't exactly been successful at that. I found cowbridgehotels.com, while browsing the web, and there are some few options I like, there, but I thought that since you live there, you can give me some better ones. Thank you.

So, did it turn out to be another failed meet-up? These things never seem to work out. I don't think trying to arrange on the forum probably helps as some people only call on now and then.

I Agree Networking would be easier with locations ect. as a retail wholesaler of liquidated stock i found it could also be counter-productive as previously customers have taken our location as a bit of an obstacle even through we ship our products u.k. wide for a flat price.

I am not in Cardiff, but in the gateway City, Newport. Sorry, I started this thread then got side tracked and didn't log in as often for quite some time. Still have quite a bit of DIY to do and then I'll have my own space to work from so should be on here more often and then will try to sort a meeting out. Unless you guys have already sorted one out ?

I'm also going to be abroad from the start of April to late May, so maybe some time after that ?

What's occurring ?

Cardiff Born-n-Bred, I and my adult son recently returned from Arabian hot deserts, blue bays and 5 star luxury of 9 years living in the Gulf, but thrilled also to view our green countryside, trees and many public gardens with wonderful flower beds. We also popped over to Chippy Lane to see how the area has changed lol. Registration of Business Name/s is in itself a stumbling block apparently here in Cardiff at the moment. How about considering that we few, currently here, in and out of this 'thread' possibly scheduling a time plus location during July, for face-to-face discussions on how easy or difficult it is to set-up a business by young entrepreneurs in, around and beyond our Capital City ? Age limit 18 to 81 ? Invite both fe/males. My son also did 2 years in China and speaks Mandarin, native English and Arabic. The Pitch Competition in Wales soon may have some benefits for particular people, however there are those who would not wish their business ideas and plans to be aired publicly, to prevent copycats lol. If UKBF do not object, please think this suggestion through and respond with a ye or nay.

B T W - is there any man online with this membership who was included in Wales Trade Delegation/s to GCC states during the previous 10 years, especially attending British Business in Kuwait Exhibitions aboard 'Dhow Hashemi II' ? If yes, were any assisted free-of-charge by a BritWelsh lady who secured them free news media interviews and newspaper English articles in Arab Times, Kuwait Times, Kuna, plus various Arabic language magazines and newspapers ?
Why ? Haha - me !

Hi and good luck with your business. What sort of business is it?

Hi I sell slow moving / surplus stock and customer returns on auction sites. Taking off really well and really fast - I gained alot of contacts in the retail business and used these as my springboard ! Originally was an eBay drop shop based in Neath selling on behalf of the public, bnut profit margins were so low and manpower was very high so we tend to aim more towards B2B now. Hard work but worth it !

Jim2k
13th July 2011, 14:36
Sounds like a nice business model. I used to do alot of ebay selling myself back in the day and made a tidy income. It's lost alot of it's charm over the years though and there were too many people selling the same things.

Best of luck.

Cardiff - the First Minister tweeted yesterday that he is doing all possible for business, jobs, etc. I beg to differ, regrettably.
There is a young male who has an alliance partner in the Arab Gulf and now at home in Wales aiming to open an Agency HQ office for business services related to 'Education & Training' for a paying clientèle of Foreign Adults/Teenagers choosing Wales/Britain, a services facilitating agency which would provide new city-based salaried employment positions for local people and paid on-the-job training for local fe/male un-employed youth, he is battling daily just merely to be granted permission for a preferred business name registration that includes the word "British" and immediately following with his limited company registration at Companies House. However, CH staff stated he had to obtain a letter of support - and he thought, perhaps a letter of 'no objection' might suffice, from the Education Minister's office at our Assembly or a Government Office in London connected with 'Education'. London neither acknowledged nor replied to any communications and the Senedd's 'Education Minister' passed an enquiry to Ms Kathryn Worsey the BRIEFINGS & COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER, HIGHER EDUCATION DIVISION, WELSH GOVERNMENT. Her staff called CH and merely copying their words, she sent an unhelpful negative reply as follows:

28th July 2011

Dear Mr Cardiff Entrepreneur,
Thank you for your further e-mails on the issue of your proposed business name. As you have probably been advised, under the Companies Act 2006 the term "British" is regarded as a sensitive name and in order to be given permission to use it at the start of a company name you would need to show your company is pre-eminent in its field by providing independent support from a representative body, trade association or government body. The final decision to allow the incorporation, however, lies with Companies House. As my letter of 19th July explained, I am afraid that the Welsh Government cannot provide a letter of support or “no objection” as you request, as we have no knowledge of your organisation and therefore cannot say whether it meets the criteria of being pre-eminent in its field. Additionally we feel that there is a danger of the name suggesting a government connection.
I am afraid that I am unable to assist you further with this issue.
Yours sincerely,
Kathryn Worsey
Briefings & Communication Manager
Higher Education Division

Cardiff Entrepreneur, obviously inserted as substitute for his name.
"British" is regarded as a sensitive name and in order to be given permission to use it at "the start of a company name" you would need to show your company is pre-eminent in its field . . . duh ?
A newly opening business activity in Cardiff . . . need to show your company is pre-eminent in its field ? Ugh ?

i.e. "British Edu.. Services ......." an agency, a facilitator of services related to education and training in Britain.

Hey guys,

Some of you might remmember me posting about a course I had applied for the tender. The course aims to put people into work or further education that are the most economicaly inactive i.e not in employment, claiming JSA or ESA. We have been succcessful in obtaining the contract and are looking for businesses in The Cardiff, Rhondda Cynon Taff regions to help by giving those less fortunate people work experience and/or mock interviews.

The people put on said placements would have shown an interest in the sector of thier proposed work experience so you wouldnt just be getting joe bloggs. A vicious circle has incased our younger generation (No experience no job - no job no experience) So if you are willing to give a helping hand in any way possible please could you contact me and we could sort something out.

Thanks in advance

Yes, I had 16 years of such occasional nights with a 'child's' illnesses - thankfully, my child could spell better than his Junior School Teacher lol. He ended up teaching English to Military Officers in China and Arab Gulf. On return to Britain, after 9 years abroad, to base his business headquarters here, he found that (most sadly) many of his school class members were either dead, in prison or permanently un-employed and still unable to spell, read or write well. He is now aged 31. Again, sad.

However, it will be a while until red-tape and company registration complexities are sorted, then he will contact you regarding his humble offer of participation in Placements for "Education & Training" plus "On-the-Job Training to suit "Un-Employed" individuals from whatever location throughout Wales which they originate. He is also an experienced Trainer. Twitter: @SPA_UK

I think a lot of members on here are see this as a way to promote their business and the nationwide forums get the most exposure.

Does seem that Wales is quieter than the other forums though. We're meant to be good at talking!
Yes, although 'talking' and typing is really not the same - we Welsh prefer to look someone in the eye during discussions surely?

Hi there

I'm Sian I am new to this business forum, recently started new business in RCT in holitic treatments and a fellow user recomended the site for general business info.

I'm considering some of these network meetings but there are so many to choose from a little lost.

Have started going to Women's entreprenueruship scheme in Glamorgan Uni and met a couple of people.

How are people finding the forum any tips or hints on getting the best out of membership?

I'm now looking to expand my business and look at linking in with local businesses and trying to get some subsidies for certain activities. No idea where to start!.

Look forward to speaking to others soon.
