Hellooooooooo :)

Gotta quickie for ya :)

How important to do you all personally think it is to have both a .co.uk AND a .com address for your business?

I have the .co.uk but the .com is still available.

Is it worth having or is it no really neccessary?

What would YOU do?

Thanks

Matt

If at all possible I would have both.... the legal experts can say if you would have a case to sue anyone who was to setup another organisation on the .com of your .co.uk and therefore gain traffic from your brand name but in my opinion, for the very low price domain names are it is better to avoid the situation totally.

If your site is aimed at or based on UK market/ information I would use the .co.uk as the primary domain and then just redirect traffic from the .com to it. If you have a more global appeal then I would do the reverse.

Whilst .co.uk are obviously aimed at services for/ based in the UK, people in the UK are equily happy using .com addresses - in other countries they are happy using their own countries top level and .com - so .com has a universal appeal.

i think it is good practise to grab every domain going. For EasyasIt i have pretty much the lot. though i have no use for .tv or me.uk etc
i think, and Rob correct me if u will that .net, .com, .co.uk are the main ones worth having
but some domain dealer will happily do a special offer and sell a who whack of them.

I would say yes, if it's an ongoing biz and you really want to be covered then .co.uk, .com and .net

I guess the golden question is ..

How guted would you be if someone else got it.

For me I didn't register the .net - I wouldn't care if someone else got it - but for another biz I own we purchased the lot.

No brainer - buy it.

I know of several cases where a competitor has registered obvious variants of someone's domain name and linked it to their website.

..... but don't forget trade mark registration which provides a monopoly over everything, domain names, company names, product names, etc.

See our website at www.crossguard.info for more info.

If it were the other way around (you owned the .com but not the .co.uk) it wouldn't be a major worry.

But in this case where you own the .co.uk and not the .com I would consider it to be essential to buy that domain. Afterall if you happen to recall seeing a website somewhere I wanted to visit it but couldn't remember which TLD it was, you are much more likely to guess with a .com before you try the .co.uk variation. Go and buy this right now, before someone figures out what domain you are talking about...which isn't exactly hard.

And .eu looks like it might be a major player!

There should be a package available that allows you to own all domain name varients linked to the domain name. (if they are available)

IE one price, and whatever is typed in .co.uk/.com/.net the same person owns them all. And it takes you to their site.

It is a pain to have to register them all separately.

I would get both and if you only have one site then redirect the .co.uk to the .com

Did anyone buy any .eu names?

Yes, we registered crossguard.eu under the first sunrise on the basis of our registered trade mark.

More than 700,000 domain names were registered in just the first four hours of the .eu landrush period.

oh yeah watch out for the companies that phone you and say we own this do you want it at £100 .... it usually means its still available and you can get it for £7 ... several of my clients have been got by this one...

Save your cash on the .co.uk. .eu domains carry more marketing value anyway.

If you notice most of the major search engines are now using the .com, but localising it. This is a top tip, we should all be considering.

eg:

http://uk.msn.com

Search engines still consider this to be a uk domain, as it has uk within the URL. They also consider it as a .com, so you get exposure in the global market as well.

A web host worth it's salt should be able to provide you with a domain of this type. I haven't moved our site over to this format yet, but I think we will when we rework the look and feel.
