Has anyone bought in lists of email addresses before? If so, would you recommend somewhere and did you find them effective.

Hi Enda,
I used to work for Market Simplicity and this was our main business. It is effective but you need to have a realistic expectation on the figures that you will achieve.
Off the top of my head, the realistic figure for read emails advised by the DMA is 3-5%, now you can achieve higher if the data is targeted correctly and is made relevant to your industry.
When working for MS, we averaged 5-7% for our clients and the ROI was pretty good as achieving a few sales usually paid for the campaign and genereate some profit as it is a relatively cheap marketing tool.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Aaron and yes it does. Response rates are low on email lists I know from past history. I suppose it is a bit like any advertising, only relevant to certain people at certain times.

That's it in a nutshell Enda. Targeted lists usually cost a little more, but will be better for you as will be relevant to your audience.

For a starting point to generate targeted lists, raw data can be bought very cheaply from Simply Sources. The databases are sold by the town/city for £10 - £20 each. Other companies may offer similar data but usually have a minimum order and are more expensive - we believe it is more useful to the user to buy raw data this way. You can use the data to generate targeted leads (pay someone else, or save money by doing it yourself).

As a domain admin, the words "we are sending you this email because you signed up to our mailing list" in an email sent to "nospamandneverexisted@my domain dot co dot uk" etc shows the "honesty" of such mailing lists: let me translate: raw means unverified, list means unverified, opt-in means unverified. mailing list means unverified. Anyone who encourages spam of any kind (no matter how well meaning) well, hanging is too good for them. Hanged, drawn and quarted in the traditional sense is about adequate: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanged,_drawn_and_quartered I know i should not sit on the fence in these matters, next time I'll express myself a little less ambiguously.

Hi Enda,
I've bought a few mailing list with poor results to be honest. We paid 3k for 32 'sends' of 20k. This data was made up of a host of industries throughout the UK. To date the company has changed name twice, changed phone number, has had legal battles and changed several members of staff...BUT we have had been able to raise several quotes and make a few sales but at the moment it's still operating at a lose.
We needed to break into the UK market and and emails are a great option for the nature of our business ( promotional merchandise and Exhibition and displays).
I'm looking at buying more lists but it seems to be the more expensive lists are, you get less contacts but the data does seem to be more reliable.
Let me know if you require any further information.
