Hi everyone,
I'm Richard, and am setting up an e-business selling premium quality food and drink products, ideally with an organic and Fairtrade focus.
Am particularly interested in hearing from anyone in a similar field.
Also, would appreciate any advice anyone has about keeping this quiet (for the moment) from my current employer. I would rather go sole trader to start with, but presumably the tax man will contact my current employer, letting the cat out of the bag?
All the best,
Richard

Hi Richard,
Good luck with your new venture.
Your business is your business, and I can't see why anyone else would be notified about it, unless you've got a dodgy accountant. But, fear not, Alpha (a respected member here) will be able to assist.

Hi Richard, and welcome.
Most of us started whilst employed elsewhere; it's never been a problem. Relax!

Yup. Relax. Contrary to what some companies believe, they don't own all aspects of our lives.
Good luck with your venture. Starting your own business while working a full-time job is hard work, but I have no doubt it'll prove to be worth it in the end. "Better to have tried and failed than never to have tried at all."

Hi Richard,
Sounds like a great little business you are planning.
Being a fan of both organic and fine produce, you can be certain that I will be taking a look !
Best of luck

A belated hello and welcometo you Richard.
There will be no need initially to worry about the revenue telling your current employer.
You will be required to register the new business within 3 months of starting and you will then be required to declare your business profits on your self assessment form
:)

Hi Richard,
Welcome to the forum and good luck with your venture.
I have worked full time and ruan my own business for just over two years now and my employer has no idea of the extent of it. All my colleagues know I paint and they know I sell my work but they can see I am more than capable of not letting it interfere with the day job.
Your company will never be contacted by the tax office as your affairs are your own. If you need help doing a tax return then the tax office will also help you complete it first time round as it can be confusing holding down more than one source of income.
Feel free to contact me if you need any help.
Claire
