I am interested to establish how much money you have spent on a single item / purchase on the internet? Do you have a maximum safe spend in your mind?

And do you check the company (if not a household name) out first, or just blindly make the purchase?

For a product, I don't think I've spent much more than £400. For a service I've paid £1000+ online - but that was to Google. I don't think I'd do that with a firm I didn't know.

Have spent over £4000 on Apple.com and spent £1800 on a copywriter I found online late last year. Never met him.

On a single item spend online, I have to date spent £500 on a camcorder. With this I only checked out their address.

I have however, have a maximum spend (in my mind) of £1000.

I think it's worth noting where you bought the items from. For example, I'd check Amazon, John Lewis and Apple for anything I want. The most expensive item that comes to mind I've ever purchased online away from those stores was a pair of headphones for £180, but their store used HSBC as the payment provider, so I knew I could get my money back if anything went wrong. I could have bought my Tag online and saved £300, but I went to the shop instead.

What stopped you saving £300 online, trust with the online store, being able to see the watch before you purchased it, or something else?

Trust. It'd be nearly impossible for me to know I'm getting a legitimate Tag with warranty from an online dealer, unless they're someone like Goldsmiths. If someone is selling something that appears too good to be true, 99% of the time it is. Plus I wanted to go into a shop looking really scruffy so they'd feel I had no money, and then spend £1500 on a watch ;)

That is what you are saying then Tom.

The whole thing about the internet and the high street is that on the high street you can gain the trust by interacting with the seller. Plus people witness your purchase (spend).

It's more the interaction between the potential customer and the seller. You can browse every single shop on your high street and find every single item they have within a few minutes, all from home. I wouldn't go into town to walk around some shops for hours, although on the Internet you can, so you'll receive more visitors, and a lower percentage of buyers.

I bought my car on eBay - although I did meet the guy twice before I piad up 6 grand.

I bought my PC on eBay, from a company I'd never heard of, that was about £300.

I bought my holiday online last year through Thomson (household name), that was over a grand.

The closest I've ever come to being burned online is I bought a DVD player from Germany (eBay again!) and it had a European plug on it. Doh!
