Hi,

I was self employed for about 6 months in 2005 and then began a job. I thought that I had sent a letter to them to say I was no longer self employed but I got a letter through saying I owed them close to £800 in NI.

I have been working full time since then so I have been paying NI but they said to check the exact date I stopped being self employed.

Only thing is, my bank statements don't go back to 2005 to see when I was last paid by the company I was contracting for.

Is there a way to find this information out some other way?

Thanks

tell them you can't remember this far back and it was roughly whatever month you think it was.

I would also ask why it has taken them 5 years to ask about it - if they had asked sooner you could give more accurate info ;):)

Apperently they sent loads of letters but it wasnt until I moved house I actually got one so want to sort it out before I try to go self employed again.

I am calling the tax office to find out when I did the return.

Will they ask for bank statement proof etc?

for this amount they shouldn't

tell them a rough month and leave it at that. They just want a date to end the class 2 from.

I would do if their phone system didn't hang up on me for them being busy. Doh!

Thanks for your help.

Will send them a letter tommorow with the information in.

I plan to go self employed again so don't want any black marks.

Have you got a copy of the last Tax Return for your period of self employment. That should tell you when you ceased self employment.

Do you have your payslips, these may tell you when you commenced work, which I assume would be roughly the time you ceased self employment.

No, this was about 5 years ago so they are long gone :(

I have found out the month so I will write to the Tax Office tommorow giving them the date and see what they say!
