Social networking for business people
Launch of new business support group in East Anglia

Is a business person likely to do business with a suitably skilled person they know, or to a faceless business card? A local businessman has volunteered to start a group for business people to meet and network with each other socially.

The number of small business owners or self employed individuals is on the increase. Each and every day there are young executives looking to meet like minded people in business. Though to build successful relationships it is often better if it is informal.

There are many formal forums through which people can meet other people in business – business breakfasts, chamber of commerce and other formal networking functions. Last Thursday is new to the business community, and has been designed to be a 21st century network organisation providing local meetings for business people in a relaxed and social environment.

Last Thursday has identified a need for business people to meet through informal events providing a format through which business people can get to know each other on a more personal level. This format is well suited to rural areas where many small business people can feel isolated – perhaps through working from home or in a small office..

Last Thursday also has an online platform to help people to interact on a regular basis. Using the website – www.lastthurday.net – members can interact and ask business related questions or they can simply log on for the social “water-cooler” type discussions missed in the smaller office.

However, the primary focus of Last Thursday is to arrange social gatherings for business people once a month – these are held on the last Thursday of every month. Anyone can turn up and there is no charge to attend. In East Anglia these are being coordinated by Henry Hopking, a businessman in the region who has volunteered to arrange these events. He said,

“Running a business is East Anglia is exciting and rewarding. However as a small business owner you can at times feel isolated from the larger business communities in London and other urban centres. There are many successful, new, young business people in our region and like me they are perhaps a little bored of the typical business breakfast type networking function - the kind of events where business cards are dealt out faster than a Las Vegas croupier and there is no emphasis on building the relationship. Having spoken with the owners of Last Thursday I have volunteered to establish a Last Thursday event each month in our region – a chance for local business people to meet others more informally, in a pub over a drink. It’s simple - buy yourself a drink, pull up a chair and join in.”

This month the first of the Last Thursday meetings in the East of England will be held in Bury St Edmunds at the Linden Tree pub on Thursday 30th March. It is free, though people are encouraged to register their attendance at the online site first – www.latthursday.net

Sounds a great idea as I have not been impressed with the "bigger boys" breakfast meetings - if you are not in big business, they don't want to know you!Any plans to hold any meetings in Norwich?

How come this is all about March? Are there any more regional events? Was it a success, is it still happening?

This thread and this press release is over 2 years old.

People really need to check the dates of threads more.
