Tricky one this because Im not sure im going to explain it well !!! :?

I would like to know if there is a service or company where I can buy a telephone number from another area.

Say for example my code is :

01277

And I would like a telephone number that has the code :

01574

Can this be done ??? Or is it just better to go with an 08 number ???

Thanks

Jacqui :D

Hi Jacqui,

It's quite a simple procedure to get the telephone number you want.

Just need to move to that area.

What you are looking for is a 'ghost phone number' Jacqui.

I know of one company that do it http://www.telecomit.co.uk/areacall.php who have fairly decent feedback.

If you wanted an 08 number then I would recommend http://www.open-telecom.co.uk/ who I believe also do ghost numbers. The 0845 numbers and 0870 numbers are totally free to you, no set up, no monthly subscription.

Obviously if you want to develop a local service then the ghost numbers would be better but if you just want a national presence then Open Telecom are the cheapest way to go

Dan :)

I'm pretty sure www.voipfone.co.uk (member: cjd) can provide a geographic number for you. You don't have to use VOIP, you can just redirect it to a landline. We do this with a number we have and the charges are hardly noticeable.

Vonage does exactly this in the US. I'm sure that any VoIP company can do the same. If your phone service is with them, it's usually a nominal additional charge per month to add a regional number. I know people who have done this so that calls from important customers are always local.

Are we to understand from this thread that a Scottish phone number is less credible than an English one? Or might one see it as a means of trying to disguise the accent  ?

Yup, you can now get any geographic number you want, it doesn't matter where you actually live. We even have some customers using UK numbers whilst living or working abroad. (They do this so they can allow customers to call them cheaply whilst living the dream in a converted farm on a Spanish hillside.)

The Guardian did an article on people using London 0207 numbers but being anywhere else other than london.

http://technology.guardian.co.uk/online/insideit/story/0,,1606956,00.html

We're now testing numbers in other countries so that you can be in London (or anywhere in the world) but have a Spanish, Bombay, Hollywood any other number.

Things aint always what they seem ;-)

Hi,

As CJD said it's quite a simple thing as it's just a number mapping.

We offer 25,000 UK geographic numbers through 4D Talk and will also be offering US, French, Spanish and German numbers shortly through http://www.4dtalk.com.

So if you get bored of VoIPFone feel free to give us a try ;-)

Hi

You could get free 0870 numbers with free call management from www.smartnumber.co.uk that

Loads of companies offer the 0870 number free but its simply forwarded through to your landline. This on the other hand is completely free call management, voicemail, call forwarding, call reports, all completely customisable at the touch of a button...

Its a completely free service too so wont cost you anything to set up or run....

dont you have to pay for any incoming calls if you are out of the office and put your line on divert to another location such as a landline or mobile?

You do have to have you pc switched on all the time to use it and that costs approx 20p per hour in electricity plus your broadband costs....

If you work in an enviroment were you never need to divert your calls, you have someone in the office continually, and have your pc on with broadband all the time then VOIP is really useful...

Only if the divert is to an ordinary BT or mobile number - in this case the call is to another Voipfone number so the divert is free no matter where it is.

No. Diverted calls do not require your PC to be switched on. The request to divert is held on our servers and has nothing to do with your PC.

If the call is going to be diverted to a PC, then the PC obviously has to be switched on to receive it.

There's no need to use a PC at all of course; with a VoIP phone or adapter it's just like having a normal phone.

You seem to have only partly understood what VoIP does; it can do everything ordinary telephony can do and an awful lot more - for a fraction of the price.

I suggest you read the general information about VoIP in our user manual.
